About The Position

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Laboratories and Scientific Services, located in Houston, Texas. The role involves serving as a Supervisory Chemist (Laboratory Director) of a field laboratory, directing and managing the laboratory, and providing scientific and technical advisory services to a wide range of clients, including both federal services and external organizations. The position is permanent, full-time, and requires a Top Secret security clearance.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Must adhere to the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures.
  • Financial Disclosure is required.

  • Experience in consulting and advising colleagues in the laboratory system and in headquarters offices on scientific support, technical advancements, and special programs.
  • Experience in developing and implementing plans to improve scientific and technological developments in chemistry and forensic services methodology and instrumentation.
  • Experience in setting priorities and schedules for completion, and assigning work to direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating scientific activities with other governmental agencies and laboratory systems.
  • Developing criteria for and conducting scientific tests and investigations on merchandise and evidence referred to the laboratory.
  • Furnishing scientific and technical advisory services.
  • Initiating, organizing, and managing the development of a comprehensive program to find solutions to novel and complex issues resulting from chemical and physical scientific tests and investigations.
  • Maintaining currency on national and international scientific and technological developments and advancements in chemistry and forensics science methodology and instrumentation.
