About The Position

The Supervisory Biologist/Physical Scientist/Chemist/Food Technologist serves as the Division Director for the Laboratory Approval and Testing Division (LATD) within the Agricultural Marketing Service. This role involves overseeing laboratory approval programs, managing the National Science Laboratories, and providing strategic advice to agency officials. The incumbent is responsible for developing policies, managing laboratory operations, and ensuring quality assurance in testing analyses of food products and agricultural commodities.

Requirements

  • Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level, overseeing laboratory testing and approval programs, including budget management and employee supervision.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level, leading laboratory testing operations and managing complex budgets.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in advising and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders in laboratory testing and approval programs.
  • Knowledge of budget management for complex programs.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and directs the implementation of program and administrative policies, goals, objectives, and priorities for the Division's field laboratories.
  • Represents the Agency in presentations to Federal and State officials, academia, industry, and trade organizations.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills, both oral and written, and a thorough understanding of user fee programs.
  • Develops short-term and long-range proposals concerning policies, procedures, and methods for the Division's activities.
  • Directs studies for the development of new or revised procedures and techniques for food product analysis.
  • Exercises overall authority for methods development to meet agency goals and client needs for testing analyses.
  • Conducts periodic reviews to ensure quality assurance programs are effective and resolves administrative and technical issues.
