About The Position

Working under direction of the Virtual Monitoring Unit Nurse Manager, the VMU Nightshift Supervisor provides direct oversight of Virtual Monitoring Technician and Medical Observer staff. This role supports the leadership team with day-to-day operations of the department to include timekeeping, department schedules, creation of pre-hires and system access request (SAR) in Workday for VMU/MO staff, departmental data collection and associated metrics, and all other duties as assigned. The Supervisor position is tightly integrated with the Nurse Manager, Assistant-Nurse Manager, and Clinical Educator of the Virtual Monitoring Unit Management team and responsibilities are defined below. If necessary, the supervisor will also work in department to assist with monitoring of the patients. Has knowledge of virtual monitor technician and medical observer duties and responsibilities. If necessary, the supervisor will fill in for department needs.

Requirements

  • CPR certification required within 30 days of hire
  • High School Diploma
  • One (1) year experience in a patient care setting or one (1) year supervisory experience.
  • Proactive, engaged, visible support person recognized as having excellent follow through on issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to give exact details.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
  • Skill in communicating orally with a variety of people answering questions and explaining information and decisions. Never uses only written communication to communicate sensitive information
  • Skill/competency in use of computer software program/systems impacting unit performance/management
  • Ability to identify, plan and coordinate services within department
  • Ability to provide staffing, scheduling and timekeeping functions, ensuring adherence to labor productivity targets
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of professional and paraprofessional staff
  • Ability to give oral and written instruction in exact detail.
  • Ongoing competency to monitor a patient remotely from the Virtual Monitoring Unit
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor a patient at the bedside

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in healthcare, business administration, IT, or related field
  • One (1) year of leadership or supervisory experience, including team coordination and performance management.
  • One (1) year experience with timekeeping and scheduling.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Virtual Monitor Technician and Medical Observer staff timekeeping functions. To include but not limited to daily timecard reconciliation, review of missed punches, correct time-type, correct position profile, proper incentive utilization, proper allocation of PTO, Stand-by, and ATO hours, proper department costing of employee worked hours, processing of payroll check request, etc.
  • In coordination with the Virtual Monitoring Unit Nurse Manager, assumes responsibility for maintenance, communication and implementation of changes within their area of responsibility.
  • Serves as the key contact for the nightshift Virtual Monitor Technicians/Medical Observers.
  • Assists with report development and maintenance as it related to tracking data within the department.
  • Attends Virtual Monitoring Unit departmental meetings.
  • Responsible for the placement of SARs, IT Tickets, Facility Maintenance Tickets, etc. for the Virtual Monitoring Unit.
  • Manages resources within budgetary constraints (time and attendance, supply ordering, overtime, capital request, etc.)
  • Completes department specific & annual education requirements within specific timelines.
  • Exhibits flexibility in scheduling to meet department needs.
  • Maintains order and functioning of Virtual Monitoring Unit and equipment.
  • Reports equipment issues promptly
  • Receives handoff communication from Medical Observer/Virtual Monitor Tech at start of shift and provides handoff communication to on coming Medical Observer/Virtual Monitor Tech for the upcoming shift
  • Identifies the specific safety risk(s) for which the patient is being monitored
  • Confirms need to initiate or discontinue virtual monitoring or bedside monitoring with shift primary nurse
  • Maintains continual direct visualization of the patient either at the bedside or visualization through the virtual monitoring system
  • Recognizes changes in the patient's behavior or demeanor that indicate increasing risk for an adverse safety event and escalates concerns
  • Remains alert and patient focused. Does not make personal calls, text or use email except during break time
  • Refrains from sharing personal details or giving advice to patient/family
  • Intervenes immediately for any actual or potential safety threat (does not provide direct patient care)
  • Documents observations and interventions by computer, hand written or verbal communication
  • Rotation of functions of a shift leader will be required from time to time to lead and organize work flow during the shift. When acting as shift lead, ability to escalate issues or concerns as soon as needed
  • Other duties may be required as business needs determine
