About The Position

Supervisor, Security – Bar Harbor Working under limited supervision, The Security Supervisor leads security operations, and coordinates, plans, and implements the critical customer service and physical security activities necessary to maintaining a safe and secure environment for the people, programs, and property of The Jackson Laboratory. The position provides, when needed, physical security support at the designated site and is available to work occasional shift hours for Global Security, which may include off-shift and weekend hours. The position requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, oversee daily Officer responsibilities and training and exercise independent, sound judgment in an often-fast evolving environment with variable, demanding working hours and locations. Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions Addresses both tactical and strategic institutional security issues and assists in developing budgets and controlling costs, departmental planning, staff and event scheduling, and drafting and implementing procedural enhancements across the Security Services organization. Coordinate day-to-day activities within the group and cooperate with other areas throughout the Laboratory to improve security, maintain a safe work environment and deliver value-added services wherever possible. Performs new employee security orientation, security awareness briefings and contractor security presentations and promotes a security-minded culture. Monitors individual performance and completes annual reviews. Leads in the selection, training and development of security team members. Assists members with establishing and achieving professional development goals and promotes an atmosphere of continuous performance improvement. Provides justification to support training and development investment for assigned staff. Maintains rapport with and serves as primary contact point for contractors, outside vendors, external law enforcement and other emergency response agencies by establishing personal contact and cooperating to resolve situations. Develop and mentor a staff of up to 20 full-time and per-diem Security Officers. Ensures laboratory personnel, animals, and property are protected. Provides confidence within staff that The Jackson Laboratory facilities provide a secure research environment. Ensure strict confidentiality and discretion is maintained regarding all business-related activities. Performs and coordinates formal and informal risk and threat assessments for Jackson Laboratory owned and operated facilities creating prioritized and phased plans to address deficiencies. When necessary, apply corrective action to maintain the respect and confidence of those served. This is a daytime position, but incumbent may be required to work other shifts as required. Incumbent is required to carry off-hours cellular phone and be available to respond to critical incidents as necessary, often outside of typical day shift hours. By nature of this position, the incumbent may be exposed to stressful or dangerous situations that result from human behavior and hostile situations that may become assault threatening, necessitating the use of physical force. Assists the Manager in ensuring the Security Officers’ weekly schedules are updated and complete. Impact on budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling and procedural change affecting the Security Services organization-wide. Cross -Training for Security Officer function as needed to assist the Site Security Team, including patrol, investigative and security functions – at times outside of standard business hours. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Exceptional skills with MS Office products, database management, SharePoint, financial and human resources information systems, and security software programs.
  • American Red Cross/CPR certification (Required within 6 months of hire)
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (Required within 6 months of hire)
  • Ability to obtain a chauffer’s license, if needed
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • ICS 100 required within 6 months of hire
  • ICS 200 required within 6 months of hire
  • ICS 700 required within 6 months of hire
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5 years

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years’ experience in a supervisory role, VIP or Executive Protection and 2+ years investigative security experience highly preferred
  • Experience responding to, leading and/or managing disaster emergency situations.
  • Associates Degree
