About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, in consultation with and under the supervision of Pharmacy Operations Manager and the Director of Pharmacy, supports the operational, personnel, and workflow needs of the Pharmacy Department. This role provides direct supervision to a defined group of pharmacy technicians and interns and serves as a key operational and people-management partner to pharmacy leadership. The Supervisor maintains competency in sterile and non-sterile medication preparation while assuming responsibility for staff oversight, scheduling, training, performance management, and daily operational coordination. This role will include on call responsibilities shared with other leadership team members.

Requirements

Education: Associate degree.
Experience: Minimum 2 years hospital pharmacy technician experience.
1 year of supervisory experience (scheduling, performance management, on-call, etc.).
Experience in all components of the pharmacy technician role including hazardous drug compounding and experience managing day-to-day operations of off-site infusion areas.
License and/or Certification Required : Current State of CT Pharmacy technician license issued by the Department of Consumer Protection.
Pharmacy Technician certification (National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board - PTCB) within 1 year of hire.
Knowledge: Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as pharmacy information systems.
Knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, including sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication distribution (including IT infrastructure such as ADCs), inventory management, and technician workflows.
Knowledge of state and federal pharmacy regulations, including USP <795>, <797>, <800>, controlled substance handling, and institutional documentation requirements.
Knowledge of personnel management principles, including scheduling, onboarding, performance evaluation, coaching, and progressive discipline.
Knowledge of quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory readiness principles as applied to pharmacy operations.
Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary teams.
Demonstrated ability to directly supervise staff, providing clear expectations, ongoing coaching, constructive feedback, and formal performance evaluations.
Strong organizational and scheduling skills, with the ability to balance staffing needs, coverage requirements, and operational priorities.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, including documentation of performance discussions and communication across teams.
Problem-solving and workflow optimization skills, including identifying inefficiencies and implementing practical solutions in collaboration with pharmacy leadership.
Abilities: Exercise independent judgment within a defined supervisory scope while escalating issues appropriately to pharmacy leadership.
Manage competing priorities in routine and unforeseen operational circumstances.
Lead and support staff through changes, including workflow updates, system implementations, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain technician-level clinical competency while fulfilling supervisory and administrative responsibilities.
Build and sustain a culture of patient safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with pharmacists, technicians, hospital staff, and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Personnel Supervision, Coaching, and Performance Management-50%
Supervise day-to-day medication preparation and delivery, including supporting infrastructure systems (e.g., automated dispensing cabinets, remote IV checking, kit preparation services, electronic health records).
Utilize lean processes and continuous improvement principles to optimize workflows and support patient care and safety.
Ensure compliance with state and federal documentation requirements for medication dispensing and controlled substances.
Provide constructive feedback, coaching, and performance evaluations to team members through quarterly check-ins, annual reviews, and as needed.
Collaborate on the development and review of departmental policies and procedures.
Partner with operations management and pharmacy leadership to develop, monitor, and evaluate pharmacy technician training programs.
Conduct regular staff rounds to enhance employee engagement and celebrate individual or team achievements.
Provide input to operations management for pharmacy technician performance evaluations.
Participate in hiring, onboarding, and recruiting for positions within supervisory responsibility.
Scheduling, Staffing Coverage, and On-Call Coordination-30%
Design, implement, and maintain pharmacy technician staffing and scheduling plans that meet departmental goals and patient care needs.
Ensure adequate staffing coverage, including filling gaps as needed, to support safe and effective operations.
Pharmaceutical Preparation and Medication Distribution-20%
Accurately prepare sterile and non-sterile medications for inpatients and outpatients, following all regulatory guidelines (e.g., USP 795, 797, 800) and departmental SOPs.
Support multidisciplinary team members (nurses, providers, PCAs) by triaging and fulfilling medication-related requests efficiently and accurately.
Serve as a superuser for pharmacy automation systems, including ADCs, IV workflow systems, RFID, or equivalent technologies.
