About The Position

The Supervisor, Patient Care PeriAnesthesia, assists the manager/director in providing clinical, administrative, financial and human resource management of designated perianesthesia department(s) in a large academic medical center on multiple campuses with level one trauma designation, comprehensive stroke center designation and transplant center. Demonstrates comprehensive specialized body of knowledge related to the specialty practice of perianesthesia nursing which includes, but is not limited to, pre anesthesia phase, post anesthesia phase I and II, and out-patient extended care. Functions within the expectations of a highly proficient professional nurse and meets nursing excellence standards to achieve and maintain Magnet Recognition as outlined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Utilizes discretion and independent judgment to manage and supervise a team of licensed and unlicensed staff who provide direct and indirect age-specific patient care for a diverse outpatient and inpatient population. Facilitates uninterrupted patient flow through the various stages of peri-anesthesia. Demonstrates flexibility and advanced critical thinking skills to direct shift operations based on substantial knowledge and compliance with the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nursing (ASPAN), state and federal regulations, LLUMC policies, procedures, guidelines, Plans for Providing Care, and Medical Staff Bylaws/Rules and Regulations. Promotes the empowerment of the nursing profession and excels in implementing new knowledge, innovations and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Facilitates a positive environment and provides hands-on guidance to engage staff in adopting a care delivery model of accountability, empowerment and excellence in practice. Performs other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing required or, an Associate's Degree in nursing with a Bachelor's degree in another field and a Master's Degree in nursing required.
  • Minimum of three years nursing experience in perianesthesia nursing required.
  • In-depth knowledge of perianesthesia and critical care nursing required.
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and survey process required.
  • Proficiency in leadership, supervision, management and communications skills required.
  • Exhibits professional behavior at all times.
  • Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills.
  • Able to read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
  • Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.
  • Other certifications as specified in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care.
