About The Position

The Supervisor of Secondary Special Education (Grade 7 - Transition) provides leadership and support in the implementation of secondary special education programs and services. This role serves as a key resource to staff, students, and families, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, while promoting best practices in instruction and student support. Additionally, the supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Transition Center, fostering programming that prepares students with disabilities for postsecondary success, including employment, independent living, and community participation

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree
  • Full approval in at least one area of special education
  • Three years of successful experience in special education
  • Full or temporary approval as a Supervisor of Special Education
  • Possess a Michigan Department of Education administrator certificate

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Student Services in planning, implementing, and monitoring secondary special education programs, including professional learning for special education staff.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal legislation and Board Policy related to special education.
  • Develop, disseminate, and guide best practices for special education in collaboration with school leadership.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs, transition plans, and student programming to support individualized student success.
  • Develop and recommend revisions to policies, procedures, and programs aligned with legal requirements and student needs.
  • Provide guidance and support to building-level special education teams, related service providers, and principals, including assistance with referrals, evaluations, placement decisions, and facilitating IEPs when needed.
  • Supervise and coordinate administration of alternate state assessments.
  • Supervise and coordinate special education programs across the district.
  • Oversee and evaluate assigned itinerant staff, support the hiring process for special education personnel, and lead the planning, placement, and training of paraeducators and student aides.
  • Supervise services provided to secondary homebound/hospitalized students, students in registered non-public schools, and registered homeschool students.
  • Collaborate with the Special Education Leadership Team and the Instruction Office to align staffing and programming with district goals.
  • Manage the daily operations and staff supervision of the Transition Center.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of transition services that support student readiness for employment, independent living, and community participation.
  • Monitor student progress and program outcomes, and adjust programming based on evolving student needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Director of Student Services, school leaders, staff, and families to ensure a unified approach to supporting students with disabilities.
  • Support and deliver professional development related to instructional practices, compliance, and transition planning.
  • Promote effective communication among schools, families, and community partners to foster collaboration and consistency.
  • Actively participate in district-level committees and contribute to strategic planning for special education services.
  • Consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
