The NHMLAC is seeking a Supervisor, Museum Educator for our Education & programs department. The Supervisor, Museum Educator is responsible for enhancing the visitor experience by supporting interpretation staff. This includes coaching support on interpretation, facilitating discussion groups and activities aimed towards skill growth, and providing scheduling support. Provides onsite supervision and support for the Museum Educator Team at the Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits Museum. Fulfills the responsibilities of a Museum Educator as needed, both in person and online, including facilitating and creating educational programs, interpreting with guests, and supporting special events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, History or Natural Science preferred, but not required.
  • One year of paid or unpaid experience in a formal or informal education setting.
  • Experience serving at the Natural History Museum and/or La Brea and Tar Pits Museum preferred.
  • Availability to work weekends and during school and national holidays.
  • Integrity and the ability to carry oneself with the demeanor, decorum, and professionalism needed for the position and its interaction with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate with others on teams, across an organization, and with external audiences.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Interest and capacity to understand and share a range of Museum content.
  • Comfortability presenting in front of large groups and on camera.
  • Fluency in a second language is preferred.
  • A valid California Driver License and a Personal Automobile Liability Insurance or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides an outstanding museum experience by contributing to a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for staff, volunteers, and guests, both in person and online.
  • Supports the Senior Manager, Interpretation by preparing daily and monthly schedules, providing coaching and feedback on interpretation for the Museum Educator team, and providing onsite supervision.
  • Assists the Senior Manager, Interpretation on training new employees, updating the team's calendar, and preparing reports on Museum Educator programs.
  • Collaborates with Interpretation and Training teams to develop and improve interpretive best practices.
  • Communicates with Program Managers, Interpretive Training on floor station coverage.
  • Collaborates cross-departmentally, including with outside organizations, for special events, initiatives and programs, such as First Fridays, Festivals, and special program/tour requests.
  • Creates and facilitates coaching modules and/or discussion groups based on interpretation, communication, museum content, program facilitation and topics related to inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) for Museum Educators.
  • Progresses the overall direction of Museum Educator programming by contributing and developing program ideas.
