POSITION OVERVIEW The Supervisor, Mechanical Operations provides frontline leadership to derailment and mechanical crews during field operations. Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical Operations this position is responsible for the direct day-to-day supervision of assigned crew members, ensuring all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Genesis Rail standards and customer requirements. The Supervisor serves as the on-site point of accountability for crew safety, equipment readiness, task execution, and communication with the Manager. This is an on-call field role that requires flexibility, physical endurance, and a strong commitment to safety.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of railroad mechanical operations, derailments, or equivalent experience in construction or heavy equipment operations.
  • Familiarity with rigging equipment, inspection standards, and safe rigging practices.
  • Understanding of PPE requirements and rail safety protocols in a field environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a crew or work group in a field environment.
  • Strong situational awareness and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Clear oral communication skills; ability to convey instructions effectively to crew members.
  • Ability to follow complex multi-step directions from management.
  • Basic computer or mobile device proficiency for reporting and communication.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, respond to emergency callouts, and travel to job sites as needed.
  • Must maintain a professional and safety-first attitude at all times in the field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in railroad mechanical and derailment operations or related construction/heavy equipment work.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a safety-sensitive field environment.

  • Prior experience in a crew lead, foreman, or other frontline supervisory role.
  • Experience in railroad mechanical operations, derailment response, re-railing, or heavy rigging operations.

Responsibilities

  • Crew Supervision — Directly supervise assigned mechanical crew members during field operations. Assign tasks, monitor work quality, and ensure crew adherence to Genesis Rail safety standards and operating procedures.
  • Safety Compliance — Lead and enforce all safety requirements on-site. Conduct pre-task safety briefings, ensure crew members are using required PPE, inspect rigging before each use, and remove damaged or non-compliant rigging from service immediately.
  • On-Call Availability — Maintain availability on an on-call schedule to respond to derailment events, emergency callouts, and customer needs outside of normal working hours.
  • Task Execution & Quality — Oversee the hands-on execution of mechanical call response, re-railing, and mechanical services. Monitor job progress and make real-time decisions to keep work on schedule and to standard.
  • Equipment Inspection & Readiness — Perform and document daily pre-trip and pre-use equipment inspections. Identify and report mechanical deficiencies to the Manager and coordinate with maintenance as directed.
  • Training & Crew Development — Support the onboarding and field training of new crew members. Reinforce company procedures, safe work practices, and skill development in daily operations.
  • Communication & Reporting — Maintain clear, timely communication regarding job status, crew issues, equipment concerns, and any safety incidents or near-misses.
  • Customer Interaction — Represent Genesis Rail professionally when interacting with railroad customers and site contacts. Communicate job progress and address concerns as directed by the Manager, Mechanical Operations.
  • Incident Response — Assist in responding to accidents and emergency situations. Follow established protocols, secure the site, protect crew members, and notify the Management promptly.
  • Crew Accountability — Address and document performance or conduct issues within the crew and escalate in accordance with company policy.
