About The Position

The Supervisor, Laboratory Technician is the senior laboratory technician responsible for sample processing. As the lead laboratory technician, the Supervisor is responsible for sample processing and aliquoting. Process samples, including nucleic acid extractions, PBMC/BMMC isolations, plasma separation, specimen aliquoting, and other methods as required. Ensure sample integrity to meet client expectations. In addition, the Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations related to sample processing as well as some administrative tasks. The Supervisor oversees a team of 3-5 employees. This role is fully onsite in Johnson City, TN.

Requirements

  • At least one of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a life science.
  • Associate’s degree in a science or health-related field.
  • Certificate in a science or health-related field and 6 months of laboratory experience.
  • More than 1 year laboratory experience including sample processing and blood handling required.
  • Strong leadership skills desired.
  • Working knowledge of requirements for sample processing in a clinical laboratory.
  • Knowledge with universal precautions and human specimens.
  • Strong attention to detail, strong planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, communication, multitasking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent listening and verbal comprehension skills, including ability to translate client needs to team members.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well independently as well as using a collaborative team approach.
  • Ability to adhere to established timelines, processes and procedures.
  • Excellent organization, communication, multitasking and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and database software.
  • Customer service/client relationship management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates daily scheduling of sample processing staff – weekend rotational calendar and flexing to help other departments as workload permits.
  • Performs training and competency assessment of sample processing staff.
  • Assists with reagent and supply inventory as needed.
  • Completes employee evaluations with manager assistance.
  • Performs extraction and purification of nucleic acids as defined by relevant SOPs.
  • Performs methodologies as specified in technical protocols to isolate and stabilize blood cells (e.g. Peripheral Blood and Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cells) according to client specifications.
  • Performs aliquoting procedures on specified samples to produce sample aliquots that are volumetric or normalized as defined by client.
  • Performs blood/body fluid fractionation into components as requested by client.
  • Help document all required maintenance activities on instruments related to Sample Processing.
  • Help maintain adequate supply of reagents, supplies and sample processing kits.
  • Performs Quality analytics on extracted nucleic acids using applied methodologies and platforms (e.g. UV spectrophotometry) to determine sample yield, concentration, and purity.
  • Utilizes appropriate procedures to register and place prepared samples into specimen management database and storage location.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with cross-functional teams and operations staff to ensure client expectations are met.
  • Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.
