About The Position

The Pathology Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Supervisor, Laboratory Services in the Toxicology Lab. SUMMARY The Supervisor, Laboratory Services provides technical direction and support to individual(s) serving as full time or part time technologists at assigned laboratory. This employee also conducts technical, administrative, and managerial functions under the supervision of managing staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel Supervisor (or higher) License-Clinical Chemistry Specialty
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

Nice To Haves

  • A clinical chemistry laboratory supervisor for 2 years or more.
  • Desired, not mandatory, certification in toxicology or clinical chemistry.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the test performance of technologists, reviews preliminary test results on worksheets, monitors the recording and distribution of finalized reports, initiates deviation report investigations, and implements corrective actions.
  • Assists technical personnel in the resolution of test result discrepancies and performance of proficiency test exercises.
  • Manages the purchase, requisition, and maintenance of the laboratory stock of supplies.
  • Oversees the orientation, training, and evaluation of competency for current and new laboratory testing personnel.
  • Assists with the management and scheduling of clinical laboratory personnel.
  • Performs occasional technical functions for activities related to the laboratory’s quality assurance program, licensure, or certification.
  • Interviews, hires, evaluates, counsels, and disciplines subordinate employees.
  • Assists in the development of departmental policies for employee bloodborne pathogen exposures, and oversees employee health exposures.
  • Collaborates with management in the education of medical students and allied technical personnel through specialized studies, scientific committees, and collaborative research.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Performs complex toxicology testing for blood and urine drug confirmations and quantitation using advanced liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Analyzes and examines patient samples to detect and quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, or other controlled substances using instrumental and chemical techniques, including advanced mass spectrometry techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GS-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS).
  • Applies laboratory techniques, analysis, and procedures, including sample preparation, chromatography, and spectrometry to patient samples
  • Independently work on QA/QC requirements with guidance from the director.
  • Oversee and assist with the preparation of quality control solutions and certification of QC.
  • Review patient sample results and all QC results.
  • Reports patient results accurately into clinical LIS systems.
  • Applies advanced statistical methods and procedures for data interpretation and method validation.
  • Utilizes software platforms such as MassHunter® to operate instruments, and Sunquest, UChart, and Microsoft Office.
  • Performs routine, non-routine, and advanced maintenance and troubleshooting for the instrumentation.
  • Oversees quality assurance and quality control duties for the laboratory.
  • Assists in training and evaluating Clinical Toxicologist 1 and 2 personnel, including internal competency and proficiency testing preparation and evaluation.
  • Attends and presents at departmental meetings and produces QA/QC reports as needed.
  • Oversees and assists in method development and validation for clinical testing.
  • Assists in ensuring conformance to CLIA and other regulatory requirements.
  • Liaison with department QA team, other department laboratory personnel, and providers.
  • Oversees and assists in maintaining laboratory-generated documentation.
  • Assist with scheduling maintenance and maintaining records of equipment and instrument maintenance and calibration.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
