About The Position

The Supervisor-Heavy Equipment Operation oversees, supervises, directs, and facilitates the heavy equipment operations and employees within the Water Utility Department. Supervises repairs, maintenance, and functionality of equipment used at various stations and around the City of Dallas.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance of heavy equipment (e.g., scrapers, loaders, tractors, mowers, compactors, or dozers), which included tasks such as engine troubleshooting, repair/maintenance of engine-driven pumps and/or minor repair of electrical components.
  • One (1) year of experience in a supervisory/lead work capacity.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Some positions may require a Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, oversees, and performs routine and emergency repairs, contacts outside vendors to perform repairs, delivers fuel to the machines, and keeps up with the daily issues caused by the nature of the work that the equipment performs.
  • Assigns and evaluates workers and the use of heavy equipment and materials to complete necessary tasks; directs and coordinates work through crew leaders, or team leaders.
  • Implements plans and schedules and determines objectives needing emphasis; communicates with management about special projects or specific actions needing to be done.
  • Recommends or adjusts work priorities, project schedules, resources, and work plans as required; processes invoices and other paperwork to ensure smooth work flow.
  • Inspects, evaluates, and reviews system checks to ensure proper function and optimal operation within set parameters.
  • Gives advice, counsel, instruction, and identifies routine training needs for employees; trains mechanics and other operators on diagnosing problems, testing procedures, determining malfunctions, making repairs, and ensuring functionality and safety of equipment.
  • Estimates personnel needs and assigns work to meet completion dates.
  • Hears and resolves minor complaints from employees; refers serious complaints to higher level supervisors or managers.
  • Finds, recommends, and implements methods to improve production or effectiveness; ensures all disposal activities are done in accordance with state and federal guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
