The Supervisor of Lighting & Electrics will serve as a primary point of contact for lighting and power installation and equipment coordination throughout various seasonal events. Using provided documentation and plans, this position will be responsible for facilitating staging and movement of equipment, tracking execution on site, and recording installation progress through communication with other departments and trades. The Universal Studios Hollywood Entertainment Lighting & Electrics team serves as the primary lighting project management and design group for all Entertainment projects. This team supports and interfaces with other Entertainment groups, including Creative, Production Design, Technical Design, Special Effects, Audio & Video, Show Control, and more to ensure successful creative and technical execution of all lighting and show power elements throughout the year. It is the overall goal of this team to develop and create both creative and technical designs and processes throughout show lighting development and execution that leave a lasting impression on our guests and team members. The Supervisor of Lighting & Electrics will focus on specific projects throughout the year and may be assigned a variety of types of projects based on department needs. This includes, but is not limited to seasonal events, special events, infrastructure improvement projects, and research and development projects. The level of involvement in these projects varies on the magnitude of the project assigned. For some projects, an individual in this position may serve as an assistant to other Lighting & Electrics team members, or this individual may drive some projects independently.

  • Support the design development, production, operation, strike, and closeout of all show lighting and show power elements.
  • Communicate design intent to other groups.
  • Pull or direct the pulling and prep of equipment from the Entertainment warehouse based on provided gear lists.
  • Ensure all equipment is in good condition and working order before sending it to site.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting on lighting and electrical equipment as assigned.
  • Facilitate on-site logistics by submitting requests and managing on-site space in relation to their covered areas.
  • Generate equipment asset reports, loss reports, and schedules for additional labor needed.
  • Coordinate the selection and hand off of practical lighting fixtures.
  • Work with project management to establish and maintain budget and schedule.
  • Generate, collect, and execute any show lighting notes as required.
  • Ensure all teams are working in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Understand and enforce department policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Understands the concepts of lighting design practices, including the properties and application of light.
  • Familiarity with lighting and show power distribution systems.
  • Ability to read and properly interpret a variety of types of drawings.
  • Proficiency in programs including AutoCAD and Vectorworks.
  • Ability to interpret show lighting documentation as it relates to equipment shop prep.
  • Able to coordinate the receiving and return of show lighting equipment from rental vendors.
  • Experience with office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Possess effective and concise communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Lightwright or generating required lighting documentation in Vectorworks.
  • Understanding of generator powered or high voltage step down distribution systems.
  • Basic understanding of low-voltage LED lighting and power/dimming systems.
  • BA in theatre, architecture, design or similar field, or a minimum of 2 years in a relevant environment.
