About The Position

The Supervisor of Clinical Lab Operations at HNL Lab Medicine is responsible for overseeing laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency in specimen collection, processing, and testing. This role includes supervisory duties, training staff, and implementing new laboratory techniques while providing 24/7 on-call coverage.

Requirements

  • Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing and qualify as a general supervisor.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and email.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc.).
  • Pursuance of specialty certification in chosen field of clinical expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of those supervised.
  • Fulfill the function of general supervisor for regulatory requirements and provide 24/7 rotating on-call coverage.
  • Monitor work activities to improve efficiency.
  • Evaluate specimen collection, processing, and testing to ensure quality/integrity under general supervision of the manager.
  • Supervise departmental activities, staffing assignments, schedules, and staff meetings to maintain high quality of work.
  • Take corrective action when necessary to redirect activities and correct problems.
  • Perform specialized and technically demanding tests that require a high level of expertise and report test results.
  • Direct the proper storage of hazardous materials and the laboratory safety program in conjunction with the safety officer.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and test methods and make decisions regarding action to be taken.
  • Review quality control data and evaluate specimen collection/processing to ensure quality/integrity under general supervision of the manager; recognize and resolve problems.
  • Communicate problems and actions to the appropriate member(s) of management.
  • Plan, design, and implement installation of new or improved laboratory techniques in conjunction with division management.
  • Establish standards, normal values, and methods of control for each laboratory test performed in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Review current literature to keep informed of new developments in the field.
  • Coordinate and conduct education and training programs for personnel.
  • Develop training/competency checklists and provide clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students.
  • Support Education Department personnel/trainers in the training/orientation of new staff members.
  • Develop and maintain department Standard Operating Procedures according to CLSI guidelines.
  • Plan for effective utilization of resources (space, time, personnel, budget, and equipment).
  • Maintain an accurate workload recording system and prepare productivity reports as requested.
  • Evaluate and adjust workload using the data.
  • Actively participate in the Continuous System Improvement (CSI) and continuing education programs.
  • Coordinate new business with the Sales Department.
