About The Position

This position directly supervises and coordinates activities of animal husbandry workers. Oversees daily work and completion of tasks by animal care technicians. The position also supports research projects with a variety of technical duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in an animal facility required.
  • 1 year working as a lead animal husbandry technician or comparable preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • AALAS certification at the LAT level preferred. If not certified, required to obtain AALAS, LAT certification within 2 years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Manages/supervises and develops an effective staff: providing effective communication, leadership, guidance and resources.
  • Determines staff qualifications and competency: recruits, interviews, selects, hires, trains, orients, mentors, evaluates, coaches, counsels, and disciplines, and rewards.
  • Assists in departmental planning of goals and objectives.
  • Assists manager in operation of animal care facility and oversees operation of facility in absence of manager.
  • Coordinates activities for compliance with regulatory and accrediting institutions (USDA, FDA, NIH, AAALAC International) by performing regular audits of the facility, writing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOP’s) training, and bringing issues of noncompliance to the attention of the BRC Manager.
  • Plans and executes Quality Assessment (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs.
  • Provides insight and guidance on troublesome breeding.
  • Assists with implementation and ongoing maintenance of Cayuse, the Vivarium software.
  • Delegates daily tasks to ensure completion of assignments.
  • Supports research projects with a variety of technical duties.
  • Develops training and proficiency testing for staff and researchers in animal care procedures.
  • Acts as liaison between animal care technicians and researchers.
