Responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing. Follows standard operating procedures and ensures laboratory safety, quality and regulatory requirements are met. Responsible for providing leadership of the day-to-day operations of the laboratory or laboratory department. Acts as a point of contact to technical staff and responds to questions and provides direction.

  • Collect laboratory specimens, as needed.
  • Process lab specimens and perform clinical laboratory testing, including manual and automated methods, in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate skill in use of equipment relevant to position.
  • Demonstrate critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to the principles, values, and ethics of the organization to promote a positive work environment.
  • Seek personal learning opportunities.
  • Recognize safety hazards and comply with all safety practices and protocols.
  • Assist in the training and competency assessment of staff.
  • Serve as a laboratory resource to other health care personnel and collaborate with other departments across the enterprise.
  • Participate in validations, proficiency testing and evaluation and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Prepare documents and hold meetings relating to performance appraisals and corrective action.
  • Responsible for interviewing and hiring of new staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between technical staff and laboratory leadership, as well as communicating issues and concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • May assist in the collection and preparation of required budget information.
  • Maintain a positive work environment for the laboratory staff and develop a team approach to optimize work flow, improve customer satisfaction and reduce errors.
  • Collaborate with other departments across the enterprise.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Associates degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred (if working in Iowa or Bismarck, North Dakota, a Bachelor's degree is required for this position).
  • Two years of laboratory related experience required.
  • Possess a national laboratory certification or laboratory specialty certification, for example: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Histology Technician (HT), etc. through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency.
  • If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed or have a provisional license, by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice.
  • Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications.
  • May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
