Under the direction of the Animal Care and Facility Operations Manager, this position is responsible for the direct supervision of a team of animal care/cage wash technicians and specialists including assigning work, monitoring and assessing work performance, and recommending hiring and termination decisions. ACP supervisors may also assist with husbandry, cage wash, and/or other technical support functions as required.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise support staff, including recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and work assignments.
  • Ensure efficient and effective task completion.
  • Interpret and apply the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NIH) and ensure adherence to all City of Hope, federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records in compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements, including logs for facility and equipment maintenance, autoclaves, RO systems, and cage wash operations.
  • Assist investigators with setting up animal housing and procedure rooms, fogging, equipment setup, and fulfilling specialized requests related to species and research protocols.
  • Provide technical support such as preparing special diets, medicating water, and assisting with animal handling and restraint procedures.
  • Supervise environmental parameters (e.g., temperature, air exchange, lighting) and manage daily cagewash operations, equipment maintenance, and inventory control for both animal care and operations staff.
  • Identify and coordinate repairs, monitor central plant systems (e.g., steam, water), and collaborate with maintenance personnel to ensure uninterrupted facility operations.
  • Enforce health and safety compliance.
  • Interview and evaluate staff, ensure policy compliance, develop SOPs, maintain training records, and contribute to annual budget planning by tracking supply usage and equipment needs.

Requirements

  • Associate degree relevant to areas of responsibility.
  • High school or equivalent and 5 or more years relevant experience may substitute for Associate degree.
  • Four years of related animal care experience ideally with demonstrated supervisory ability.
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification (or possess a current LAT certification with LATG certification obtained within 6 months of hire) or completion of an equivalent certification or degree program.
  • Valid California Driver License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in animal science, biology, or related field.
  • LATG, Six Sigma Certification.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
