About The Position

The Verge is seeking an ambitious and aggressive Supervising Producer to lead and elevate our long-running tech business show Decoder. This is a full-time, hybrid, production and management role based out of the Vox Media offices in New York City. It reports to our Editorial Director of Audio/Video. The ideal candidate is an experienced video leader and creative storyteller with deep knowledge of, and passion for, Decoder’s coverage areas of business, entrepreneurship, and public policy as they intersect with tech. They will directly manage a team of staff producers and editors, plus freelance talent, in creating multi-platform, multi-format content across our video, audio, and social channels, plus adjacent special projects and sponsorship opportunities. The Supervising Producer will help direct and carry out Decoder’s larger programing strategy, consistently elevating the show’s voice, reach, and visual aesthetic while managing deliverables and deadlines. We’re looking for an ambitious and aggressive leader who can juggle multiple projects in various production stages while kick-starting new ones in a fast-paced environment. Requirements

  • You have an ambitious and aggressive POV on driving show quality and growth. Editorially, you don’t shy away from conflict. Operationally, you are ruthless in driving reach, growth, and results. This assertive mindset cannot be overstated and is the #1 quality we are looking for
  • You have full-stack production pipeline experience for both audio (podcasts) and video (YouTube or broadcast) - from development through pre-production, post-production, packaging and publishing - and are able to flex into any aspect of production at a moment’s notice
  • You have expert-level experience with Adobe Creative Suite - equally comfortable tweaking edits in Premiere as making thumbnails in Photoshop
  • You have sharp journalistic storytelling skills and experience producing across multiple formats (i.e. short-form, mid-form, and long-form audio and video)
  • You have a passion for and knowledge of Decoder’s coverage areas of business, entrepreneurship, and public policy as they intersect with tech - including key players and companies, both past and present
  • You are relentless in growing your personal rolodex in our coverage areas and enjoy regularly networking with newsmakers to secure high-profile guests
  • You are a savvy internet operator, conversant in the latest trends, methods, and growth hacks to build an attention engine for the show
  • You show excellent judgement when making creative and operational decisions, with an eye towards balanced distribution of limited resources across all team priorities
  • You can effectively delegate decisions to other team members, follow up, and hold them accountable for execution
  • You are skilled in the art of giving and receiving direct feedback, striking a balance between producers’ creative autonomy and greater brand necessities
  • You can quickly navigate a matrixed organization to solve problems and streamline processes, working with multiple stakeholders with sometimes conflicting priorities
  • You have the ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced production environment, make crisp editorial and prioritization decisions, while delivering against tight deadlines
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate positively with people with different personalities and working styles
  • You show grace under pressure, high integrity, and have an emotionally intelligent communication style

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute overall show strategy - including creative, publishing, and social - to drive massive audience growth
  • Own all show operations and communications, including team bandwidth, budgeting, and resource allocation
  • Work with talent to sharpen editorial POVs and on-camera presence
  • Partner with Senior Producers on guest booking, with an eye toward securing high-tier talent
  • Manage a team of experienced producers, directors, and other craftspeople - including career pathing, performance feedback, project feedback, and development support
  • Provide creative direction and feedback across both audio and video projects
  • Partner with our NetDev team to oversee development and production of special projects and editorial sponsorships, including live events
  • Partner with our Publishing & Audience Lead to ensure publishing deadlines, optimize content for social platforms, and quickly shift publishing priorities based on audience analytics and breaking news
  • Step into production pipeline as needed - directing story angles, planning records, liaising with guests, and supervising and executing edits
  • Help define and maintain The Verge’s industry-leading video style and editorial voice, allowing for consistent, repeatable output
