About The Position

Bay Area Legal Aid seeks an attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to supervise and mentor members of our San Francisco SSI Advocacy Team. The team includes attorneys and social workers who help unhoused San Franciscans with physical, mental, and cognitive disabilities apply for, appeal, and obtain Social Security Disability/SSI/CAPI benefits as well as other economic benefits to secure a stable income and exit homelessness. The Supervising Attorney will work closely with the Managing Attorney and other Supervising Attorneys to ensure high-quality legal services and support for clients. This position involves community engagement, attending client meetings, and supervising both legal and social work staff.

Requirements

  • Commitment to BayLegal's mission.
  • Membership in good standing in the California State Bar.
  • Five or more years of practice as a licensed attorney.
  • One or more years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Direct legal service experience with low-income individuals in Social Security claims.
  • Ability to clear a Live Scan background check.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Experience with inter-agency collaboration and working with diverse partners.
  • Current proficiency in necessary technological equipment and software.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor staff attorneys and social workers to ensure high-quality legal services.
  • Attend intakes, client meetings, and partner meetings throughout the city.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings to discuss case reviews, intake trends, and advocacy opportunities.
  • Review open and closed cases for quality and compliance with policies.
  • Guide staff in developing advocacy strategies through direct representation and community outreach.
  • Conduct training, mentoring, and professional development for staff.
  • Engage in annual planning and periodic reviews of team priorities.
  • Maintain a small client caseload and cover team cases as needed.
  • Participate in local, state, and federal meetings for policy advocacy.
  • Work with the Managing Attorney to maintain relationships with community partners.
