About The Position

The Superintendent, Stevedore, provides expert guidance and direction to supervisors and lead associates at terminals and ports of entry, focusing on breakbulk cargo such as salt, lumber, and steel. This role involves planning daily work schedules, directing associates to ensure accurate, efficient, and timely delivery, maintaining proper inventory control, and responding promptly to customer requests. The Superintendent also oversees training related to facility and company policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Proven experience handling and supervising associates on multiple types of cargo, especially breakbulk.
  • Ability to operate and train associates on multiple types of cranes and understand specialized rigging and cargo handling gear.
  • Excellent communication skills to provide clear instructions and directions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with an excellent safety record.
  • Capable of training new employees, motivating, and building morale within the team.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and hold associates accountable for performance and results.
  • Extensive warehouse and stevedoring experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a 3-year driving history acceptable to our auto insurance carrier.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain disciplined control on all aspects of stevedoring operations, ensuring effective communication between management, supervision, and all production and support personnel.
  • Identify training requirements and ensure all personnel possess technical job proficiency and a clear understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and performance goals.
  • Schedule and shift personnel to create efficient work teams, initiate cross-training to achieve productivity goals, and ensure proper documentation and records of associate performance and safety.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, recommend pay changes, and initiate a progressive disciplinary process, including counseling and issuing oral and written warnings.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, sanitation, and security procedures, continuously inspect loading and unloading gear and equipment, and coordinate with the Port Captain or Cargo Officer on stowage, loading, and discharging operations.
  • Initiate work orders and report maintenance needs for equipment and facilities.
  • Assume various additional projects or tasks as necessary and perform other duties as assigned.
