Responsible for allocation of human capital, equipment and railroad track construction materials for the crew and jobs supported by the Kansas and Texas location. Supervising the crews assigned to the office and scheduling the crew’s work to complete committed maintenance, emergency and capital jobs. Coordinate with central office the capital equipment demand, maintenance and transportation that supports cost efficient use. Maintain inventory controls and reporting. Responsible for the operational cost performance of the Kansas and Texas office, minimizing non-job-related costs. Must be able to work in a matrixed environment coordinating with internal customers: Safety, Project Managers, Superintendent – Construction, Controller, Human Resources.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5-7 years of experience in railroad track construction
  • 5+ years in a supervisory/management role highly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of track structure, construction and maintenance, and identifying track defects.
  • Must have a sharp eye for detail
  • Superior communication skills; Must be comfortable engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
  • Must have the ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with the typical problems that occur in rail car switching.
  • Certification required if operating on track is controlled by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on direction and implementation of scheduling crews track construction, rail yard maintenance work, and other projects as assigned.
  • Determine materials needed and staff requirements for projects with Project Manager/Estimators.
  • Will utilize company operating procedures and FRA rules, standards, and instructions to complete project work and to maximize asset utilization to control costs.
  • Coordinate with the Superintendent-Construction for the work assigned to the Foreman and crew ensuring that it is completed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform inspections including crew trucks, equipment and tool inspections. Safety audits as required.
  • Prioritize employee safety and foster a safety-first culture within management and employees
  • Understand internal costs for resource allocation and profit maximization
  • Manage projects, pricing, and margins to agreed goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
