About The Position

Responsible to lead a team of Electrical Reliability Engineers and Electrical Specialists. Focus of this group is to improve and ensure the reliability of the electrical power distribution systems, and the strategic implementation of power distribution system changes in order to achieve maximum flexibility and reliability. Superintendent will also be responsible for supervising the electrical engineering team in managing electrical focused projects, from conceptual engineering through detailed design, construction, and project completion. Highly motivated, team-oriented individual who has a background in electrical engineering in industrial systems, preferably in a refining/petrochemical environment. Should have a good understanding of industrial electrical applications up to 35kV class. Familiarity in the topics of electrical safety, hazardous area classification, power distribution and protection, motors and motor controls, electrical studies and industry standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.). They should also have a willingness to interface with different disciplines and groups throughout the refinery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) or foreign degree equivalent in Electrical Engineering
  • Eight (8) years of electrical engineering experience in industrial systems, preferably in a refining/petrochemical environment
  • Experience with ETAP electrical modeling software
  • Experience with microprocessor relays and Real-Time Automation Controllers (RTAC)
  • Experience with variable frequency drives
  • Experience in electrical equipment testing, maintenance and troubleshooting practices for industrial electrical applications
  • Experience with specification and application of industrial electrical applications up to 35kV class
  • Experience with the topics of electrical safety, hazardous area classification, power distribution and protection, motors and motor controls, electrical studies and industry standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.).
  • Prior capital projects experience
  • Experience interfacing with different disciplines and groups within an industrial/refinery setting
  • Must be able to regularly work on a full-time basis at the assigned location and arrive to work at scheduled start time.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical and managerial leadership for the Electrical Engineering Department.
  • Motivates employees toward goals of electrical system safety and reliability.
  • Coordinates the daily activities of the Electrical Engineering Department.
  • Oversees implementation of tools used to evaluate and prioritize departmental assignments.
  • Supervises staff as required to provide technical support for Operations and Maintenance.
  • Supports refinery and corporate electrical initiatives seeking continuous improvement in ESARN performance.
  • Supervises the Engineering and Specialist staff as required to resolve electrical equipment reliability issues as identified by the “Bad Actors” list.
  • This may require the use of formal Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methods and cross-functional teams.
  • Supervise the Engineering and Specialists staff as required to identify, define and implement projects designed to improve power distribution and electrical equipment reliability and performance plant wide.
  • Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with local utility company to include routine communications and long range planning to improve power supply reliability.
  • Maintains monthly communications either directly or by delegating to other engineering staff in the electrical reliability group.
  • Maintains minutes of said meetings for distribution to appropriate refinery personnel.
  • Provides mentoring and development guidance to all engineers to assist them in advancement of their skills.
  • Ensures engineering assignments are completed in a timely, efficient, and technically accurate manner, adhering to administrative guidelines.
  • Supervises engineering support for turnaround activities on all major and/or critical electrical systems, which includes developing inspection and repair recommendations, generating detailed workscopes and cost estimates, contracting and supervising external resources, and coordinating internal resources as required to complete the specified workscope within the allotted
  • Supervises electrical engineers and contract personnel to ensure adherence to company procedures and policies.
  • Provides assistance with the preparation of the capital and expense budgets.
  • Provides reports as necessary for budget and monthly activities.
  • Promotes the environmental and safety goals of Valero.
