About The Position

The SunTran Transit Operator I, II, or III operates City of St. George transit vehicles of various sizes in a safe manner over assigned routes according to established time schedules, while maintaining order in the vehicle and providing courteous service. The position involves various essential job functions including operating transit buses, collecting fares, ensuring passenger comfort, and maintaining vehicle safety and cleanliness. The role also includes assisting with outreach activities and training of other operators.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with passenger endorsement.
  • CPR and First Aid certification desired.
  • Current DOT Medical Card.
  • Previous experience driving public transit vehicles is preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age for Transit Operator II and III positions.
  • Transit operator experience of one (1) year or more for Transit Operator II and two (2) years or more for Transit Operator III.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Experience with Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) and Automated Voice Announcement (AVA) systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operates transit buses of various sizes over assigned routes in accordance with specific manifest instructions.
  • Collects appropriate customer fares and ensures the comfort of passengers.
  • Maintains order among customers and handles volatile situations according to standard operating procedures.
  • Promotes positive passenger relations by announcing bus stops and assisting customers with fare and routing information.
  • Files special incident reports and completes daily reports.
  • Performs daily inspections of vehicles and reports any operational or maintenance problems.
  • Assists with vehicle cleaning and daily maintenance of the bus.
  • Attends and successfully completes all transit training as scheduled by the supervisor.
  • Assists with the collection of data for planning/scheduling of transit services.
  • May assist with other activities needed to run the division such as clerical tasks.
