JDE: 4.58B Summer Term ESL Teacher (6th-12th Grade) Purpose Statement The role of the Summer Term ESL Teacher is to strengthen student skills through interventions tailored to prioritized standards. Job Title: Summer Term ESL Teacher Pay Rate: Hourly/per diem - $45.00 Time Frame: Weeks of June 8th-11th, June 15th-18th, and June 22nd-25th Hours: 9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. Monday - Thursday. Reports To : Building Administrators, designated to supervise Summer School Wage/Hour Status : Non-exempt Job Outline: Teacher is expected to work 2 hours of instruction, and 30 minutes of planning/supervision daily onsite. 8 hours of curriculum planning directed by Summer School Administration. 4 hours of assessment / credit / data review and term wrap up as directed by Summer School Administration Qualifications Meet certification requirements of the Department of Education, State of Iowa. Meet certification requirements in at least one of the following content areas: English as a Second Language endorsement Recent general education teaching experience at the elementary level within Ankeny, preferred. Demonstrated experience with MTSS process and designing and implementing successful academic and behavioral interventions, preferred. Demonstrated experience in differentiating instruction and using multiple instructional strategies to meet student needs, preferred. Essential Functions Instruction & Student Support Plan and deliver engaging, research-based ESL instruction to support English language development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse language proficiency levels of K-5 English Learners (ELs). Utilize sheltered instruction and other evidence-based strategies to enhance language acquisition and academic success. Provide targeted literacy and math support to reinforce grade-level skills in a language-rich environment. Classroom & Behavior Management Establish a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment. Implement positive behavior strategies to encourage participation and confidence in language development. Foster a growth mindset and encourage perseverance in language learning through engaging, interactive activities. Collaboration & Communication Work closely with general education teachers, interventionists, and support staff to align instruction with students’ academic needs. Communicate regularly with families to provide updates on student progress and share strategies for language development at home. Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress, instructional strategies, and language acquisition goals. Curriculum & Assessment Implementation Follow district-approved ESL curriculum and instructional frameworks to support language acquisition. Integrate technology, visual aids, and hands-on resources to enhance student learning experiences. Administer and analyze language proficiency assessments to guide instruction and monitor student growth. Professional Responsibilities Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and instructional adjustments. Uphold district policies, procedures, and professional ethics in all interactions. Engage in reflection and seek professional growth opportunities to enhance ESL instruction. Other Functions Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution Directs paraprofessionals, student teachers, and/or volunteers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students Performs other related duties, as assigned. Working Environment Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
