About The Position

The principal role of the Summer Temp Service Desk Assistant is to provide excellent customer service within Ehrhorn Law Library by answering basic directional, technical, and research-related questions from all library patrons. This is a professional position that demands courteous and polite interactions with the service population, and a vigilant posture while staffing the Service Desk. This position reports to the Access Services Coordinator/Supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES · Provides excellent customer service by answering library user questions in person and on the phone, reserving study rooms for law students and faculty, and locating physical and electronic resources for checkout or in-library use. · Maintains and cares for library spaces and resources by completing hourly counts, reshelving and shifting books, checking printer supplies, reading the shelves, updating legal texts, and cleaning the library. · Performs the general duties listed above with the goal of maintaining a clean and clutter-free environment conducive to study. · Completes special projects assigned by the Access Services Coordinator/Supervisor or Associate Librarian for Public Services. · Keeps a vigilant posture while staffing the Library Service Desk to identify patrons who may need assistance and/or those who may be exhibiting behavior that is problematic to others. · Demonstrates the ability to work in and with diverse populations, supporting an inclusive environment in accordance with Liberty University School of Law’s Non-Discrimination Policy. · Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner. · Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ. · Complies with Liberty University School of Law’s business casual dress code.

Requirements

  • At least one semester of college education is required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand and speak English, as well as read and write in English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to read call number labels quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to promptly and reliably follow and record scheduled hours.
  • Ability to communicate with the general public and facilitate professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of patrons and associates.
  • Ability to organize items and workspaces.
  • Ability to provide behavioral direction in a consistent, firm, congenial, and God-honoring manner.
  • Ability to deal with others in a courteous, respectful, and tactful manner.
  • Ability to analyze information and events and subsequently apply judgment to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize and complete tasks.
  • Ability to think quickly to resolve potential issues with patrons.
  • Occasionally required to travel to other campus locations.
  • Regularly required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Regularly required to handle materials, reach overhead, kneel, or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly required to lift 40 or fewer pounds and push book carts weighing up to 250 pounds.
  • Candidates must have safe transportation available to commute to and from work.
  • Candidates are expected to work 38 hours a week.

Nice To Haves

  • Grade point average of 3.0 or above is preferred.
  • Federal Work Study status is preferred.
  • Previous customer service experience is preferred.
  • Some knowledge of the Library of Congress classification and call number system is preferred.
