About The Position

Pend Oreille County PUD #1 provides residential, commercial, and industrial utility services (electric, water, broadband) to County residents. The District also owns and operates Box Canyon Dam, located just a few miles north of the town of Ione, approximately one hour north of the District’s headquarter offices in Newport, WA. The District will have the following summer employment opportunities for those students who are eligible and qualified (see guidelines for additional information). The term of employment for these positions is approximately three months and may begin as early as mid-May (depending on school schedules). Position Summary – Power Supply This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. The primary responsibilities for this position include to collect, clean, and organize datasets from various internal and external sources; assist with data-related documentation; help identify and streamline simple data workflows; conduct basic data analysis to identify trends and patterns; other administrative and analytical tasks as assigned. The successful candidate should be detail oriented, have familiarity with computers, experience using Microsoft Excel, possess an understanding of using Microsoft Word, Outlook and Windows. Experience with and understanding of relational databases is preferred. This position is ideal for a student who is interested in applying analytical skills gained from studies in fields such as data science, mathematics, engineering, computer science or economics. This position offers hands-on experience with real datasets, exposure to industry tools/processes, and the opportunity to learn from experienced staff. Normal working hours are 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Position Summary – Engineering This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. The primary responsibilities include assisting the Engineering Department with a variety of technical and project support activities related to the planning, design, and operation of the District’s electric utility system. Work may include supporting engineering staff with data analysis, reviewing and organizing engineering documentation, assisting with mapping and records updates, and supporting engineering projects involving utility infrastructure, field testing, and system analysis. The assignment will provide students with practical exposure to how engineering principles are applied in the operation and planning of an electric utility. Individuals must have strong analytical and mathematical abilities, be comfortable working with computer-based tools for data analysis and documentation and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should be detail-oriented and well organized. Preference may be given to students currently enrolled in an engineering or engineering technology program. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Position Summary – Telecommunications (Fiber) Crew Helper This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. The primary responsibilities for this position include digging ditches, glue conduit, pulling wire through conduit, and driving a pickup and small trailer. Will be required to assist Technicians with daily work, and other duties as assigned. Normal working hours are 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Position Summary – Customer Service Representative This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Administration Building in Newport, WA. This position focuses on office work and providing service to customers by performing receptionist, telephone, and mail processing/delivery accountabilities; payment processing and cashiering duties while maintaining professionalism to ensure service expectations are achieved and departmental policies, procedures and standards are followed. Individuals must be familiar with computers, possess an understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows 10 or Windows 11, and be detail-oriented with good communication skills. Normal working hours are 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Position Summary – Brush Crew/Vegetation Management This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of Newport, WA or Ione, WA. Brush crew members will work alongside District line construction and vegetation management crews and be responsible for clearing brush and small trees within power line easements and other rights-of-way. Crew members will be responsible for vegetation cleanup after District line/vegetation maintenance crews remove larger trees/branches. Crew members will also be responsible for safety flagging duties on state/county roadways for the line/maintenance crews. This is physically demanding work, requiring the ability to safely operate a chain saw and mobile chipping machine for extended time periods. Work is performed outdoors under a variety of summer weather and terrain conditions. Individuals must be able to regularly stand, walk, climb, lift/carry and work under outdoor conditions of ongoing and significant physical exertion. Brush crew members must be able to work safely and sometimes independently – must be self-starting and demonstrate good judgment on a continuous basis. Strict adherence to OSHA/WISHA standards and District safety procedures and practices is required. Normal working hours are 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $24.35/hr. Position Summary – Line Crew Helper/Warehouseman This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be based out of the Newport Line Crew Headquarters Building in Newport, WA. This position will be split between the two areas of responsibility as needed. As a line crew helper, the individual will organize and clean trucks; do flagging and spotting; operate a shovel and deliver tools, equipment, and materials to job sites. As a warehouseman the individual will assist in maintaining the overall physical condition and appearance of the warehouse including stocking of parts/inventory items and loading/unloading various materials, sometimes involving the use of a forklift and District vehicles as well as grounds and building maintenance for the Administration Headquarters facility. Other tasks may require the use of landscaping power equipment and power/hand tools. Training will be provided as needed. Moderate (and sometimes rigorous) physical exertion will be required; work occurs both indoors and outdoors, under a variety of summer weather conditions. Normal working hours are 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Position Summary – Maintenance, Box Canyon This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be located at the Box Canyon Dam. Maintenance workers will perform general grounds/facilities maintenance and cleanup at the Hydroelectric Project and several off-site locations. The position involves driving/operating pick-up trucks, small maintenance vehicles, and a variety of power equipment/tools in the course of completing various job duties. Individual must be a self-starter and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work will be required in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments in summer weather. Normal working hours are 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Position Summary – Water Crew Helper This temporary, full-time employment opportunity will be located in Newport, WA or Ione, WA., The primary responsibilities include helping with basic operation and maintenance tasks across the District’s water systems and facilities; assisting with routine site inspections; performing simple maintenance activities; collecting and recording water quality data; supporting field staff with equipment; and completing general shop or grounds tasks. The role provides hands-on experience in water system operations, exposure to regulatory standards, and the opportunity to learn about distribution systems, safety practices, and fieldwork in varying indoor and outdoor summer conditions. Normal working hours are 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Pay rate: $19.98/hr. Student interns are temporary positions that do not qualify for regular benefits.
