About The Position

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for an internship with Fishing and Boating Services’ Freshwater Fisheries Program. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in the field of freshwater fisheries management, habitat and population assessments, hatcheries, and fishing education and outreach. The main purpose of this position is to provide assistance to fisheries-related tasks, both in the field and in the laboratory, relating to freshwater sportfishing management. The selected candidate will assist with fyke net surveys to assess fish communities in inland impoundments (reservoirs and ponds); electrofishing, seining, and lab work to assess tidal freshwater fisheries habit and tidal bass populations; backpack electrofishing to assess inland stream fish communities; providing fisheries-related education and outreach at community fishing-oriented events; and other groups within fisheries with fieldwork on Maryland’s coastal bays, the Chesapeake’s brackish, tidal rivers, and special projects relating to inland fisheries habitat improvement projects. The internship runs twelve weeks between June and August. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.

Requirements

  • Applicant must be a current or recently graduated college student, undergraduate or graduate level.
  • A GPA of 2.5 or above is required to receive academic credit.
  • The applicant must possess a valid drivers license and/or their own transportation and ability to report to their work center in Brandywine, MD.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in or having recently completed a major of study relating to environmental science/policy, natural resources management, biology, fisheries management, marine biology, or a related field.
  • Preferred candidates will possess an enthusiasm for gaining first-hand experience working in Maryland’s diverse array of waterways–from fishing ponds and lakes to streams, tidal freshwater rivers, brackish rivers, and coastal bays.
  • Familiarity and experience with fishing or fisheries is desired but not necessary.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working aboard small outboard boats in/around adverse conditions, including heat, biting insects, jellyfish, poison ivy, ticks, and thorns and may be asked to work long hours.
  • Candidates should possess the ability to perform minor physical tasks related to walking on a stream bottom, carrying a backpack up to 20lbs, hiking off-trail, and safely perform tasks such as pulling nets, lifting buckets of water, and staying upright aboard small watercraft.
