Position summary: The Summer Shade Guide will provide direct service to the children and youth enrolled in the program while helping to support the program’s mission. Throughout the service period, the Summer Shade Guide will serve as a mentor to the children and youth enrolled in the Summer Shade Program while acting as a positive role model and develop positive and healthy relationships with the students. The Summer Shade Guide will also use this position to learn and develop new knowledge, skills, and abilities regarding workplace etiquette, career success factors, self-awareness, leadership abilities, and self- reflection.

Requirements

  • Must be an active participant in the Branches Climb Program
  • Must have a love for children and enthusiasm, exhibit leadership capabilities, knowledge of behavior management techniques, and possess cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Must have basic public speaking skills

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to speak Spanish or Creole is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Direct Service Teach enrichment activities for Grow Program Participants.
  • Model and encourage respectful behavior.
  • Program Support Support leaders during Summer Shade Program activities.
  • Provide leadership and support to our Grow Program Participants during all classes.
  • Participate in preparation of opening and closing summer sessions.
  • Participate in planning and recap of daily program activities.
  • Areas for Personal Growth Learn workplace etiquette and develop appropriate employee values and traits to contribute to program success.
  • Develop and polish communication skills suitable for a professional workplace.
  • Gain experience in completion of common employment requirements such as completion of applications, interviewing, punctual arrival, documenting time, understanding and respect for authority figures, problem solving, teamwork, conflict resolution, and receipt of constructive feedback and direction.
  • Increase self-awareness regarding talent, strengths, and development areas and gain confidence in applying positive skills while working on development areas.
  • Develop leadership skills and apply them when working with children and youth.
  • Learn to understand, accept and appreciate cross-cultural norms.
  • Growth Reflection Activities Attend regular Group Meetings to help plan activities, set goals, discuss situations, accomplishments and needs, and reflect on one’s involvement.
  • Completion of Self Evaluation and meeting with supervisor to discuss and compare their evaluation with that of supervisory staff.
  • Guides will have the opportunity to participate in the Climb programming.
