About The Position

Residential Advisors (RAs) are essential to providing a healthy, supportive, and enjoyable summer experience for students, ages 10-17 (Residential Program) and Day Program participants, ages 5-12 (Children's Center). Reporting to the Lead RAs, Dorm Heads, Director of Residential Life, Director of Community Life, Assistant Dean of Students, Summer Program Director, and the Executive Director of Summer Programs, all RAs share the core responsibility of maintaining the safety and integrity of Idyllwild Arts and its campus. RAs must maintain a supportive yet disciplined environment, ensuring the safety and happiness of all program participants. Those best suited for this position are self-starters, good listeners, inventive, quick on their feet, able to strike the proper balance between friendship and discipline, and, most importantly, are a team player. Due to the nature of the Summer Programs, RAs must have availability 7 days per week, and will be expected to work split shifts. While all RAs share core supervisory duties, their day-to-day focus varies significantly: Program RAs (Activities & Operations Focused) Program RAs are the primary drivers of student life activities outside of class time. Activity Leadership: Plan, organize, and lead all out-of-class time for residential students, including daily afternoon/evening activities and weekend recreational activities. Logistics & Setup: Assist in campus duties such as preparing venues for performances, culmination events, and studio/classroom setups. Campus Support: Perform light maintenance and grounds duties, including instrument moving and dorm furniture moving, to ensure the safety of program participants. Event Coordination: Serve in roles such as stage crew assistance, ushering for performances and culmination events, and facilities preparation. Dorm RAs (Residential Life & Supervision Focused) Dorm RAs are dedicated to the direct supervision and welfare of students in the residential setting. Student Accountability: Ensure assigned students are present at all scheduled meals and classes. Curfew & Safety: Ensure students are safely in their assigned dorms each night at curfew. Dorm Environment: Organize and maintain dormitories to allow for safe, healthy living and a positive atmosphere for growth. Community Building: Plan and lead hall bonding activities. Active Engagement: Be active while on-duty—socialize with, eat meals with, and engage with students at events, and maintain a consistent presence in common spaces. Overnight Supervision: Supervise sleeping hours for students (on Lead RA’s days off). Children's Center RAs (Day Program Focused) Children's Center RAs work exclusively with participants in the Day Program. Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Supervision: Provide direct supervision and engage Day Program participants in age-appropriate activities and transitions. Core Duties: Duties are similar to other RAs but tailored to a day camp setting, focusing on ensuring the safety and positive experience of younger, non-residential participants during program hours. Shared Specific Duties (Applicable to All RAs as Assigned) Rule Enforcement: Implement and enforce all Student Life rules and regulations, while providing a positive environment for students. Communication: Communicate behavior problems to the Dorm Head/Parents and assist in positive resolution. Assigned Duties: Carry out assigned duties which may include, but not limited to: pool duty, snack and water duty, and excursion chaperones. Meetings: Participate in daily meetings to plan Student Life activities and complete duty assignments. Meet with Dorm Staff and Students Services teams when necessary to discuss problems, concerns, discipline, and rewards. Safety Monitoring: Monitor campus and classroom/studio safety, and report concerns to lead staff. Driving Duties: Driving duties of campus vehicles which may include driving on-campus errands, town runs, evacuation drills, or student field trips. Other Duties: Other duties may be assigned by the Lead RAs, Dorm Heads, Director of Residential Life, Director of Community Life, Assistant Dean of Students, Summer Program Director, and the Executive Director of Summer Programs.
