About The Position

One of the nation’s premier boarding schools, Phillips Academy’s Summer Session challenges students in an innovative five-week program, conducted on its picturesque campus just 21 miles north of Boston. More than 60 courses are offered, ranging from computer science to marine biology, from ethics and philosophy to economics. Summer Session students bring the world into the classroom by virtue of their enormous diversity of geographic origin, religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background. With strong academic records and a serious desire to spend the summer in a residential community, our students enjoy challenging themselves and one another through disciplined study. About the Role Two part-time summer counselors are hired each year, charged with providing consultation and short-term intervention for students with acute emotional needs under the direction of the Academy’s Director of Psychological Services. Together, all counselors ensure that there is full-time coverage for the psychological needs of the summer student body. Each part-time position will involve ~20 hours of scheduled availability, and one weekly workshop session, as well as being on call up to three evenings per week and every other weekend. Room and board may be included as part of a total compensation package for summer counselors if requested.

Requirements

  • Masters or Doctoral degree in psychology, social work, or a related counseling field
  • Licensed to provide counseling services in Massachusetts
  • Experience working with adolescents in grades 7-12
  • Demonstrated experience and success in a collaborative teaching environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring both the ability to take direction and the readiness to problem-solve
  • Appreciation of the mission and culture of independent, residential, college-preparatory schools
  • Exceptional communication skills (speaking and writing)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
