About The Position

The Summer Nurse Extern position in Labor and Delivery/Postpartum serves as a bridge to augment the growth of the nursing student as they transition from the student role to that of a novice nurse. The extern will work 36-40 hours for 6-8 weeks during the summer at Aurora Medical Center Kenosha. The role involves various responsibilities under the observation of a Registered Nurse, including completing activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring. The extern will collaborate with the Registered Nurse to establish a plan of care based on health, education, and developmental needs, and will evaluate patient responses to interventions.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Nursing.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Current enrollment (in final year) or graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Completes activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of the Registered Nurse.
  • Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in establishing a plan of care based on health, education, and developmental needs.
  • Evaluates patient response to interventions and communicates observations and patient needs to the Registered Nurse.
  • Develops delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles on the unit.
  • Administers medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse, with evaluated clinical judgment and proficiency.
  • Manages an increased number of patients and incorporates time management principles into shift routine.
  • Collects and synthesizes relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs.
  • Participates in emergency situations under appropriate supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, requiring lifting and pushing/pulling.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles to provide age-appropriate care.
