About The Position

This is a great opportunity for someone studying environmental science, education, interpretation, or natural sciences to gain experience in outdoor programming and first-hand field studies! You will have the flexibility to design curriculum and plan experiential learning for camp programs. This is high-impact summer employment that still leaves most afternoons and weekends free. JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Environmental Outreach Specialist, Nature Camp Instructors are responsible for planning, preparing, and teaching nature-based camps. Each camp program is a week-long session, some based on a specific theme, that runs Monday – Friday from 9-11:30. Some weeks will include an afternoon camp from 12:30-3pm. This is an eight-week position, in addition to training that will be scheduled prior to the start of camp. Instructors work with children ages three through thirteen, in groups of 10-16 campers. Each instructor will have an assistant. Camp is held outdoors in a natural park with hiking trails, a pavilion, and green space. Activities include but are not limited to: nature hikes, reading stories, completing crafts, doing scientific experiments, group games, plant identification, creek and pond studies, tracking animals, habitat enhancement, and more. Additional duties include behavior management, set up, clean up, craft and activity preparation. Planning time will be needed each week for the upcoming camps and resources will be available. This is an at-will position. Nature Camp Dates: June 15-August 7 Orientation Dates: Starting in mid-May with details to follow. Hours: For morning camps, Monday – Friday from 8am-12:30pm (Camp Hours: 9-11:30am). For morning and afternoon camps, Monday - Friday from 8am-3:30pm (Camp Hours: 9-11:30am and 12:30-3pm). Location: Churchill Park, 271 St. Charles Road, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 Please note: Our expectation is that you will be available for the entire eight-week program, with a limit of one week of absence for a scheduled family vacation or similar that should be discussed at time of hire.

Requirements

  • Must be in good physical condition for playing games, walking trails, and being on their feet for extended periods.
  • Strong voice and listening skills with the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.
  • Must have adequate sight to observe participants and identify potential hazards.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, such as equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Must be comfortable teaching in the outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including high heat and humidity.
  • Capable of assisting campers with basic physical needs, such as applying sunscreen, tying shoes, etc.
  • Individual must be 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, their parents, and the public.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work is required.
  • Candidate must pass a post-offer background check.

Nice To Haves

  • The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, and have a strong interest in nature, conservation, and the environment.
  • Preferred candidate has, or is pursuing, a degree in education, ecology, biology, or natural resources.
  • Prior experience working with children of multiple ages is recommended.
  • Knowledge of plants, animals, and ecosystems is helpful and preferred.
  • Previous camp and/or teaching experience is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain discretion regarding confidential matters and/or information.
  • CPR / First Aid certified, or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire. (We will provide.)
