The Mary and Jean Borg Center for Reading and Literacy at Illinois State University is hiring two ISU Student Tutors for its Summer Literacy Tutoring Program. This program provides individualized reading and writing support for students in grades K–6 from the local community. As a tutor, you will work directly with elementary students under the guidance of Borg Center professors and staff. Tutors receive intensive training in literacy instruction and assessment, including practices that support reading, writing and language development through responsive teaching. This position is designed as an instructional apprenticeship. Tutors will work alongside professors to observe, plan, and facilitate literacy instruction based on students’ strengths and learning needs. Summer tutors may have the opportunity to continue in the position during the academic year. This experience offers meaningful preparation for careers in education and other youth-serving professions. Many former tutors report that this role significantly deepens their understanding of literacy instruction and better prepares them for professional careers working with children and families. Students in this position will need to consistently attend all scheduled sessions. Students in this position will need to be reliable, punctual, willing to learn and engage in onging training and mentorship, able to take initiative and respond to feedback in a professional manner.
