About The Position

SUMMER CAMP 2026 IS NEAR! Location: Various Apple Montessori Locations (Mahwah, Oakland, and Paramus, NJ) We are currently accepting applications for our program and will begin interviewing starting in April 2026. At Apple Montessori Schools, being a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor is more than just a summer job; it’s an opportunity to build confidence, teach life-saving skills, and create joyful, memorable experiences for young children. In this role, you’ll be a key part of our summer camp program by ensuring pool safety while leading fun, developmentally appropriate swim lessons. With a Monday through Friday schedule and no nights or weekends, you’ll enjoy a strong work-life balance while making a meaningful impact each day. When swim activities are paused due to weather, Lifeguard/Swim Instructors support our classrooms, helping create a positive learning environment indoors. Your role may shift, but your impact remains just as important, rain or shine. Hiring Timeline · Interviews Begin: April 2026 · Summer Camp Session: July 6 – August 28, 2026 Perks of Working at AMS Summer Camp · Monday–Friday only — no nights or weekends · Full-time position: 35-40 hours per week · Consistent daytime hours with a great work-life balance · Rain or Shine – We’re a Team! On non-swim days, Lifeguard/Swim Instructors assist in classrooms and support teaching staff · Support provided for Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, including CPR and First Aid training (if needed)

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 7 out of the 8 weeks of summer camp
  • At least one year of experience working with children
  • Ability to maintain required physical and mental readiness
  • Outdoor-based role requiring swimming, diving, and treading water
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity
  • Normal hearing and vision (including color distinction)
  • Ability to remain calm and flexible in dynamic or stressful situations
  • Must be available for scheduled hours throughout the camp session
  • Duties performed on site unless otherwise approved

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area and conduct regular headcounts of children
  • Provide safety instructions to children prior to pool entry
  • Supervise swimmers to ensure adherence to safety protocols
  • Identify hazards or potential risks and take preventative measures
  • Perform water rescues as needed
  • Administer first aid and CPR in emergency situations
  • Conduct pool chemical checks to ensure safety and hygiene
  • Maintain accurate records of pool usage and chemical levels
  • Teach level-appropriate swimming techniques and water safety based on Apple Montessori Schools' swim lesson standards
  • Inspect and maintain rescue equipment and safety supplies
  • Ensure pool equipment and chemicals are stored safely
  • Follow all emergency procedures and safety guidelines
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming aquatic environment
  • Assist Teachers and Teacher Assistants in classrooms when needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
