About The Position

The Summer Landfill Worker performs general office duties including operating the weigh scale, answering telephone and walk-in customer inquiries, and monitoring trucks from the landfill. Performs general maintenance and upkeep of the landfill grounds and buildings including dust and litter control and other miscellaneous duties.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. Ability to understand construction documents.
  • Basic computer knowledge required using windows based software applications.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to calculate slopes and elevations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age

  • The ability to deal with irritable citizens regarding sorting loads and facility rates is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Answers incoming phone calls and responds to public informational requests/inquiries regarding: hours, recycling and municipal solid waste rates, procedures, etc.
  • Monitor trucks entering and leaving the Landfill/Material Recovery Facility, acting as a main gate.
  • Inspects and examines loads of waste entering landfill to identify and categorize waste.
  • Directs driver to proper area of landfill and/or denies entrance of unauthorized material.
  • Assist at appliance, e-waste collections, and county wide tire collection
  • Operates computerized scales, inside and outside, to determine weight of vehicle load and corresponding usage/dumpage fee.
  • Calculates fees or fixed prices for each load brought to landfill.
  • Collects money and issues receipts.
  • Records each load, fees and other information.
  • Balances cash drawer with receipts to ensure accuracy.
  • Removes cash and deposits in safe.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally.
  • Conveys basic information to the public when approached with questions.
  • Maintains working relationships with others where necessary in carrying out job functions.
  • Mowing, weed whipping and painting around grounds.
  • Performs related work as apparent or assigned.
