About The Position

Acuity's engineering team in Des Plaines, IL, is hiring a summer intern to play a role in key projects within light fixture new product development, in collaboration with the optical and light engine engineering teams, to continue building core business strategies and Capabilities. This role works onsite in Des Plaines, IL.Are you a driven and talented individual looking for the place to do your best work while developing into an impactful leader? Internship Program is a 10–12-week experience (May – August, 40 hours/week) designed to develop high-potential candidates into marketing leaders through hands-on experiences that connect interns’ strengths and interests with the needs of the business. In addition to making an impact through your participation in key projects and transformative processes, you will have an opportunity to mentor and network with leaders throughout Acuity Inc.   We prefer that interns only have one or two semesters left in their degree program so they can be considered for our Leadership Program immediately following the completion of the internship. Our Leadership Program is a full-time, entry-level rotational program that allows recent graduates to explore different areas within a functional area. These experiences enable young talent to grow their skill set and network within the company while figuring out what they are passionate about early in their careers.

Requirements

  • pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering or a related manufacturing, product development, or product design field from an accredited college or university
  • Relevant internship or project experience
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Availability to travel based on business needs (0-10%)
  • Some understanding of manufacturing methods such as sheet metal stamping/forming, aluminum die casting, plastics injection molding, and extruding of metals and plastics
  • Familiarity with typical metal and plastics machining and rapid prototyping processes
  • Possess mechanical aptitude suitable for assembling, disassembling, and troubleshooting products using various hand and power tools
  • Experience and familiarity with creating detailed drawings and documentation for component and assembly manufacturing using standard drafting practices
  • Proficient use of 3D/2D CAD (Solidworks preferred), MS Office, etc.
  • Ability to coordinate testing/evaluation of various products and interpret resulting data
  • Basic understanding of residential, commercial, and/or industrial construction methods, including electrical wiring of buildings
  • Basic understanding of electronics design and wiring practices
  • Ability to communicate verbally, in written form, and through sketches and engineering drawings
  • Basic experience in project, timeline, and budget management
  • Demonstrated experience working and collaborating with cross-functional team members

Responsibilities

  • Work in an electromechanical environment, which is essential for product design, part assembly, and detailed part drawings.
  • Prototype, test, and assemble prototypes and samples.
  • Learn and develop skill sets in Product Development, Project Management, Testing/Certification, Tooling Methodologies, Design for eXcellence, and introduction to Embedded Controls and Drivers for several strategic priorities.
  • Assist in the execution of tactical requests on an as-needed basis.
