SUMMER INTERNSHIP: LAW STUDENT INTERN

Georgia Legal Services ProgramAtlanta, GA
294d

About The Position

The Farmworker Rights Division of Georgia Legal Services Program (FWRD-GLSP) seeks to hire a law student intern to support our advocacy on behalf of clients with claims of unpaid wages, breach of employment contract, employment discrimination, and other violations related to their employment in agriculture, including labor trafficking. The FWRD provides free legal representation to eligible farmworkers with employment-related matters in Georgia. Typical cases involve employers failing to pay workers' wages; discrimination based on sex, citizenship or national origin; subjecting workers to human trafficking conditions; and breaking recruitment promises. Clients include guest workers from Latin America, in addition to local and migrant U.S. farmworkers. The tasks assigned to our summer interns vary depending on the current needs of our office. Interns will be expected to participate in outreach visits to farmworkers throughout rural Georgia; research facts and interview clients and potential clients to develop new cases and support current cases; research legal issues and draft legal memoranda; support our litigation and administrative advocacy work as needed; and help with the victim representation and preparation of immigration applications for trafficking victims. The Farmworker Rights Division is housed in GLSP's central office in Atlanta, providing interns an opportunity to work alongside other advocates committed to combating poverty and injustice. The legal intern will also work closely with our Director of the Farmworker Rights Division, the Farmworker Rights staff, and fellow interns.
