Xylem Summer Internships typically last 10-12 weeks (early June – mid Aug) and are an opportunity to get hands-on, professional experience while making a lasting contribution to Xylem as an organization. Our internship program is intended to create a pipeline of talented undergraduate students who are interested in a career in the water innovation technology industry. Interns are our primary talent pool for all full-time early career positions and rotational programs. The Summer Internship is a great opportunity to learn more about Xylem and see if a career in water technology is right for you. The hourly rate for an intern is dependent on a variety of factors including major, year in school and geographic location. The average hourly rate for an intern is between $21.00 - $27.00/hour. Locations of internships will vary based on the specified project and function. This internship role will be onsite in our facility located in Morton Grove, IL. The Operations/Engineering Intern will support the deployment of Lean principles and continuous improvement initiatives across operations. This role provides hands-on exposure to process optimization, waste reduction, and performance improvement projects while working closely with cross-functional teams

Requirements

  • Currently rising Junior or above pursuing a bachelor’s degree within the specified majors, enrolled at an accredited college or university, legally authorized to work in the U.S without sponsorship, and able to work on-site.

  • Basic understanding of lean conecpts (5S, Kaizen, VSM, waste reduction)

Responsibilities

  • Support design and implementation of lean supermarket system
  • Establishing pull-based inventory controls
  • Defining minimum/maximum stock levels
  • Implementing Kanban systems
  • Organizing material flow and visual controls
  • Monitoring replenishment signals and inventory accuracy
  • Support the implementation and optimization of Line-Side Storage system
  • Designing point-of-use material storage
  • Reducing excess WIP and floor space utilization
  • Standardizing bin locations and visual management
  • Improving ergonomics and operator accessibility
  • Ensuring alignment between supermarket, tugger routes, and line-side replenishment
  • Assist in the design and implementation of tugger/milk run routes
  • Analyzing material flow and delivery frequencies
  • Designing optimized routes and schedules
  • Monitoring route peformance
  • Participate in mapping current processes (Value Stream Mapping)
  • Help develop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Perform root cause analysis (5 Whys, Fishbone, Pareto)
  • Support cross-functional teams with improvement initiatives
