About The Position

Grubhub's Merchant Analytics team is seeking two summer interns available for 8-10 weeks between June and August. The Merchant Analytics team is responsible for using data to intelligently target restaurants well-suited to Grubhub's platform and monitoring the performance of existing restaurants. As an intern, you'll support restaurant targeting by evaluating signals of restaurant popularity and emerging trends. Using a variety of data sources, you'll strive to answer the question, “what are the best restaurants for delivery in X city?” You'll compare data that Grubhub already collects to potential additional data sources, such as social media mentions, online reviews, and local food bloggers. Throughout your research, you'll document key findings and make recommendations for how the process can be scaled. A successful candidate will be detail-oriented and organized; able to distill disparate information into business insights; and be curious to learn about our business and the restaurant landscape. A love of food doesn't hurt either!

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • Strong analytical thinking with the ability to frame an approach, extract insights, and clearly communicate findings.
  • Ability to balance attention-to-detail with execution in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organized and documents processes for repeatability.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with SQL is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Review and validate restaurant data, using resources such as Google Maps and Yelp to ensure accuracy.
  • Identify data inconsistencies and provide feedback to improve the accuracy of our web scraping models.
  • Proactively identify new and trending restaurants in key metropolitan areas.
  • Conduct research across social media, online reviews, and influential local food bloggers.
  • Generate a comprehensive list of 'hot' restaurants, with key information.
  • Evaluate potential new data sources to enhance our understanding of the restaurant marketplace.
  • Assess quality and reliability of third-party vendor data, hyperlocal social media groups, and other data sources.
