About The Position

To perform general office work in designated department or area of assignment for the City of Sarasota's Economic Development office. The intern will assist the Office of Economic Development in promoting Sarasota as a vibrant business destination. This includes supporting marketing campaigns, business outreach, and community engagement initiatives that align with the city’s economic development goals.

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to a junior or senior in high school or attending vocational school or college.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and basic content creation.
  • Ability to conduct research and summarize findings clearly.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement action with reference to assignments.
  • Ability to communicate ideas, both verbally and in writing, with clarity and precision.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and comprehensive records of activities.
  • Ability to adapt to changing assignments and a varying workload which may be inherent in the orientation to any given science, discipline, or municipal operation.
  • Ability to effectively participate in such work as may be required.
  • Ability to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the assigned position, in accordance with the standards set by both the Department Head and the educational institution.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, superiors, officials of the City, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and interest in economic development or public administration is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in creating and scheduling social media content to promote local business programs and events.
  • Support development of marketing materials (brochures, flyers, presentations).
  • Research and compile data on local businesses, industry trends, and economic indicators.
  • Help organize and promote economic development events and workshops.
  • Draft blog posts or newsletter content highlighting business success stories and city initiatives.
  • Participates in departmental planning sessions for both day-to-day and special projects.
  • Works independently, as assigned, under the general or specific guidelines as to Department policy and practice.
  • Incumbent may be required to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in the job description.
