About The Position
The Summer Nurse Externship Program at Mercy Hospital offers nursing students the opportunity to work within a hospital setting alongside members of the healthcare team, including registered nurses who will serve as mentors. This program is designed to help students develop their clinical and critical thinking skills, building confidence as future nursing professionals. The Nursing Education team provides support and facilitates a robust learning experience. Participants will contribute as part of the Mercy Hospital Nursing team in delivering compassionate patient care.
Requirements
- Enrolled in a BSN program with completion of Nursing Fundamentals
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association.
Responsibilities
- Shadow an RN to learn about patient assessment & treatments.
- Observe care in Specialty Areas
- Perform skills similar to a nursing assistant, including but not limited to taking vital signs, performing blood glucose monitoring and bladder scanning.
- Promote a positive patient experience.
- Be a member of the healthcare team
- Attend many nursing education programs
