About The Position

Discover the Outdoors Recreation Team Lead instruct and lead activities in accordance with prescribed curriculum. You will interact with youth, facilitate activities and supervise some aspects of youth recreation programs, providing safe and rewarding opportunities for youth in fun outdoor experiences. This is a van-based program that picks up under-resourced participants at various low-income housing apartments or mobile home parks around Bend. DTO explores state parks, team building activities, hiking trails, water activities, and staff help kids develop a positive relationship with the outdoors. Each camp will be targeted to engage ten middle-school aged youth. Team leads are responsible for providing leadership and support to staff for assigned program or shifts.

Requirements

  • Strong Knowledge of: Behavior management;
  • Childhood development and age appropriate crafts, games and activities;
  • Safety and sanitation guidelines;
  • General knowledge of supervision practices.
  • Skill and Ability to: Exercise strong initiative and significant independent decision making;
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, planning and problem solving skills;
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form;
  • Supervise and motivate staff;
  • Interact with a variety of patrons/participants;
  • Handle emergency situations as they arise;
  • Actively participate in all activities;
  • Establish and maintain positive, respectful and cooperative relationships with all contacts.
  • Education, Experience, and Training: High school diploma or equivalent; AND One (1) year of experience in area of responsibility and/or performing similar tasks AND Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred (additional compensation for this skill) OR Any satisfactory combination of experience and training.
  • License & Certification: Some positions may require possession of CPR/First Aide certification to be provided through on-the-job training.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.
  • This position may require reporting to additional sites throughout the workday, typically achieved in a motor vehicle OR other modes of transportation. If choosing a personal vehicle, possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.

Responsibilities

  • Training, mentoring, directing and assigning work. May assist Supervisor in hiring and evaluating staff.
  • Assists Supervisor in developing, planning and scheduling programs.
  • Oversees facility operations during assigned shifts; opens and closes facility;
  • Ensures that health and safety standards are maintained; oversees the operation and care of equipment and supplies, addresses maintenance issues.
  • Ensures the inclusion of all participants, adapting activities to meet individual needs and abilities and working with Therapeutic Recreation staff as needed.
