About The Position

As the Summer Day Camp Head Counselor, you will supervise all Summer Day Camp Counselors and summer volunteers to ensure high levels of success while ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.
  • At least 1 year of childcare experience and at least 6 months of supervisory experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver’s qualification standard; must complete Safe from Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting, pulling, and pushing of materials up to twenty-five pounds
  • May require bending, squatting, walking.
  • May require standing for extended

Responsibilities

  • The head counselor will be a key holder and have a code for the security system.
  • Prepare daily activities and lessons to ensure a positive experience for all campers.
  • Oversee counselor’s daily preparation needs; for example – daily supply gathering, routine building security and equipment checks, proper cleaning and storing of materials at the conclusion of each day.
  • Adequately communicate with all colleagues, campers, and supervisors.
  • Correspond with camper’s parents/guardians, keeping them informed of the camp activities and their child’s participation.
  • Be sure that areas in Corps are neat, clean, and in good repair.
  • Be the first point of contact for parents in the morning.
  • Communicate any special instructions with counselor staff at the beginning of each shift.
  • Keep program director informed of any specific needs for improved program success.
  • Lead, direct, and participate in all functions of summer programs; for example – recreation, meals, snacks, crafts, etc.
  • Train counselor staff in proper care and use of games, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with The Salvation Army’s Safe from Harm program guidelines.
  • Be primary point of contact in emergencies and fill out reports; accordingly, report incidents and /or accidents to Community Center Coordinator.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, students, co-workers, and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: conflict resolution in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors, and students; respect of others’ property and person; as well as professional and appropriate communication to and about students, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Provide positive, encouraging, and uplifting attitude toward campers, counselors, and all summer program participants.
  • Other tasks as assigned by leadership.
