About The Position

The School Nurse (RN) provides expert health services and one-on-one care to our diverse student body. The School Nurse is responsible for managing the health office, medication management and administration, providing direct nursing care, and serving as the primary health resource for the entire school community, in support of Rochambeau’s core values and mission. This seasonal role supports our multilingual summer program, which is attended by approximately 75 students each week.

Requirements

  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Maryland
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Knowledge of current practices for managing common childhood illnesses and chronic diseases.
  • Well-developed and effective communication skills (oral and written) and strong human relations skills; ability to work well with other teachers, support staff, parents, and students
  • Good organization and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information
  • Regular, predictable, and reliable attendance at work
  • Basic computer, mathematical, and writing skills with attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or related field.
  • Two or more years of experience in school nursing, pediatrics, community, or public health nursing settings.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first aid and emergency care for student and staff accidents and illnesses
  • Administer prescription medications and over-the-counter (OTC) medications in accordance with school policy, and specialized nursing care procedures under physician’s orders
  • Manage and administer care based on Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Individual Emergency Care Plans (IECPs), including the management of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and confidential student immunization records and document all student health encounters in the school’s electronic health record system
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the home, school, and external healthcare providers regarding student health concerns
  • Educate students, parents, and staff on good health practices, nutrition, and specific health concerns
  • Assist with maintaining the ongoing health and safety of the school environment, including coordinating with public health authorities, in partnership with the School Director, during health-related restrictions or outbreaks
  • Supervise and evaluate tasks appropriate for delegation to certified personnel (CMT), documenting delegation and supervision in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of audiences, including students, staff, visitors, and parents/guardians
  • Positively support the school’s mission, policies, and practices, and work collaboratively in a professional organization
  • Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance
