About The Position

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum explores and preserves the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region, and makes this resource accessible to all. As a vital community partner and industry leader, CBMM will create engaging, immersive, and transformative experiences that educate and inspire individuals throughout the Chesapeake Bay region and beyond. Scope CBMM’s Summer Camp Program has developed a reputation as an exceptionally fun, well-run program that provides lasting memories for campers and staff. CBMM’s expansive grounds and waterfront location provide unique opportunities for laughs, learning, and lifelong memories. Counselors for CBMM’s Summer Camp Program design and lead activities for children ages 4-15 throughout the week-long camp session. Each camp session focuses on hands-on learning through art-making, on-the-water experiences, stories, games and more. CBMM’s Summer Camp program runs on weekdays from 9:00 to 4:00 with aftercare running from 4:00 to 5:00 from late June through August. Most camp instruction takes place in small groups of no more than 15 children, allowing for focused, enjoyable experiences for campers and instructors. Summer Camp Lead Counselors must be at least 18 years of age with previous experience working with children in a summer camp or other educational setting. The Lead Counselor collaborates with other camp staff to plan and implement camp curriculum with support from CBMM’s Education Department. All counselors offer support in program delivery and will be expected to lead activities and supervise children in a safe, fun environment.

Requirements

  • Interest and experience working with children ages 4 to 15.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and/or a high school graduate.
  • Subject to State and Federal Criminal Background Check as defined by COMAR 10.16.06
  • Physical ability to work with campers on CBMM’s’s 18-acre campus, exhibits, boats, and docks, working predominantly in an outdoor environment.
  • Acquire and maintain a CPR/First-Aid certification (training provided annually by CBMM)
  • With limited exceptions, full-time availability is required Monday–Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. during all camp weeks. Hours will vary by shift, totaling approximately 35–40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Actively supervise and manage a group of up to 15 children, providing a fun, safe, active, and engaging camp experience for campers throughout the eight-week season.
  • Plan and oversee the daily camp curriculum to make the weekly camp themes come alive. This includes gathering program materials, including those available in the Education Dept. offices and working with the Education Department staff to secure other materials as needed.
  • Enthusiastically engage camp groups through hands-on, developmentally appropriate, fun activities.
  • Set-up and clean-up class materials each day, working with other camp staff to maintain a physically safe and clean camp environment.
  • Work positively with coworkers, supervisors, and volunteers to ensure a positive camp program that creates lasting childhood memories.
  • Lead by example and serve as a role model to all.
  • Provide coaching and developmental support to Counselors-in-Training, Junior Counselors, and Counselors throughout the summer to support team growth.
  • Adhere to State of Maryland and CBMM policies to maintain a safe camp environment for all campers.
  • Must adhere to assigned working hours, ensuring program coverage, and providing for the timely set-up and clean-up of program materials.
