About The Position

The Wellness Summer Camp Intern will assist the Wellness Program Manager to manage, plan, coordinate, monitor and conduct Wellness Services for LOGAN and to make these services available for any persons in St. Joseph County with a developmental disability.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience may include a combination of life experience and working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Interest and aptitude to work with adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude to support individuals with disabilities.
  • Willingness to learn and implement positive approaches to instruction and behavior management.
  • Ability to make connections between persons with disabilities and services which will enhance their independent functioning.
  • Ability to develop relationships with service providers outside of LOGAN.
  • Ability to supervise and educate Staff/Volunteers who may attend Recreation activities.
  • Ability to work with and consult families and agency staff when they have roles in providing for the Recreation Activities.
  • Must be able to assist in lifting participants during transportation while assisting with hygiene, positioning, transferring from a wheelchair, and/or toileting when needed.
  • Must have computer skills, including Microsoft Publisher and Excel.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team approach, and the ability to communicate orally or in writing.
  • CPR/First Aid, and Mandt System Certifications required (training provided by LOGAN).
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to meet all LOGAN policies and procedures in regard to transporting individuals served by LOGAN.
  • Ability to drive a 12 passenger, Mini, of Wheelchair Lift LOGAN Van year round.
  • Must be available to work afternoons, evenings, and all weekends on a flexible schedule.
  • Must be able to drive at a night and in adverse weather conditions if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Wellness Program Manager with weekly Summer Camp throughout the summer.
  • Plan the Children/Young Adult Wellness Summer Camp activities in coordination with the Adult Wellness Calendar.
  • Provide an enriching environment and planned activities appropriate to the developmental level of persons
  • Create, compile, review, and distribute the Young Adults Activity Calendar with all pertinent information for activities.
  • Reach out to area Schools’ Special Education Services, (SACA) Sonya Ansari Center for Autism (South Bend & Benton Harbor), etc. in hopes to reach the community and share LOGAN programs.
  • Ensure all participants have updated Annual Participation Forms for LOGAN Wellness. Update Mailing lists as new forms are received and move participants to appropriate mailing list for their age group.
  • Serve as an agency liaison with the community, providing recreation/leisure activities which promote community integration opportunities to serve consumers and act as a resource to multiple community programs when necessary.
  • Provide education and training for volunteers who attend Wellness Activities in coordination with the Wellness Program Manager.
  • Follow behavior plans for participants’ attending Wellness Activities; reporting any issues.
  • Attend meetings as required by LOGAN and the Wellness Department.
  • Communicate regularly in a professional manner with primary caregivers, residential staff, and/or parents regarding activities and leisure needs.
  • Complete necessary paperwork within a timely manner during or after Wellness Activities. (i.e.: incident reports, seizure reports, mileage log, documentation)
  • Provide direction and appropriate role modeling for individuals served.
  • Assist persons served with basic hygiene needs as necessary.
  • Assist persons served at mealtime as necessary.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of persons served as well as other staff, volunteers, and visitors to LOGAN.
  • Expected to serve as role model for persons served and volunteers attending activities.
  • Expected to serve as an advocate and to protect the human rights of persons served.
  • Expected to participate in training as required by Supervisor or for all LOGAN Staff.
  • Assist in preparing/aiding persons served in arrival and departure from LOGAN activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
