About The Position

The primary responsibility of this position is to create a connection between campers and animals that will impact the camper’s desire to care for the natural world. This involves assisting with lessons and activities both indoors and outdoors, while monitoring camper safety and participation. Camp instructor is responsible for creating an exciting and welcoming environment for campers and families. This position will also help facilitate the Zoo-Teen Volunteers, Zoo Summer Camp and Snore N Roar Overnight Camp Program.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pass preemployment background check
  • Knowledge and experience in interpretive techniques
  • Knowledge and experience in current teaching trends
  • Maintain a professional appearance and positive image to the public
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Strong speaking and organizational skills, including the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and public
  • Comfortable working around and/or be trained to handle Ambassador Animals for educational programs

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer college degree in an education or science related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
  • Previous experience delivering formal/informal education preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and interest in nature and science.

Responsibilities

  • Must commit to working 32-40 hours per week for 12 weeks between the dates May 22 – August 7 (includes some weekends, holidays, and overnights) .
  • Uphold the mission and goals of the zoo in all educational programming .
  • Responsible for delivering Zoo Summer Camp and Snore N Roar Overnight Programs for all ages.
  • Supervise the safety of campers, coordinate daily camp activities, set up and breakdown of equipment and activities related to camp.
  • Implement on-site education events to showcase zoo animals and zoo conservation efforts
  • Assist in all aspects of Zoo-Teen program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
