About The Position

Are you passionate about creating memorable experiences for campers? We are looking for energetic and dedicated individuals to join us as Summer Camp Head Counselors at Adrian L. Shuford Jr. YMCA. As a Head Counselor, you will play a key role in leading and supporting our camp counselor team to ensure a fun and enriching summer camp experience and in accordance with the North Carolina licensing guidelines, you will play a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment, guiding campers through exciting weekly themes filled with lessons and activities.

Requirements

  • Must be a minimum of 18 with high school diploma or GED
  • Positive and effective communication skills
  • Willingness to attend leadership training and continued education
  • CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Current TB test, criminal background test, and fingerprints
  • BSAC Training
  • YMCA Child Abuse Training

Responsibilities

  • Camp Leadership and Lead Counselor: Provide leadership and guidance to a group of camp counselors, fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment. Take the lead in coordinating and organizing daily camp activities, ensuring a well-structured and engaging program for campers.
  • Supervision and Staff Support: Oversee a group of campers, ensuring their safety, well-being, and active participation in camp activities. Support and assist camp counselors in their roles, providing guidance and assistance as needed.
  • Communication and Conflict Resolution: Maintain open communication with the Summer Camp Coordinator, fellow Head Counselors, and camp counselors to ensure smooth coordination and execution of camp activities. Address and resolve any issues or conflicts that may arise among campers or staff, fostering a positive and collaborative atmosphere.
  • Training and Collaboration: Assist in the training and development of camp counselors, sharing insights and best practices to enhance the overall camp experience. Collaborate with the Summer Camp Coordinator to implement and enhance camp programs, ensuring they align with the camp's objectives and values.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Participate in the mandatory training week during the week of May 20th to prepare for the upcoming camp season. The first week of camp is scheduled to begin on May 26th, and your active involvement will be essential in ensuring a successful start to the summer program. Assist in administrative duties such as attendance tracking, camper registrations, and other paperwork as required. All YMCA staff are responsible for creating a safe, inclusive environment. This includes following all YMCA policies and procedures related to abuse prevention, reporting concerns or incidents immediately, and maintaining appropriate boundaries with youth and members.
