Requirements

  • Teaching, childcare, or classroom experience
  • Experience working with children aged 4–12 from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities
  • Prior summer camp experience
  • Undergraduate studies related to childcare/education/leadership

Responsibilities

  • Manage and support 10–15 staff members of various ages and experience levels to ensure they fulfill the job responsibilities and requirements of a “General Counselor.”
  • Supervise 65-90 campers aged 4–12, ensuring their physical and emotional safety during daily activities, swimming sessions, and NYC field trips.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment.
  • Guide staff and campers through transitions, reinforce behavior expectations, and respond to conflicts or emergencies.
  • Independently plan and lead one physical activity and one creative craft per week, aligned with the weekly themes, and deliver them to 3–5 different divisions throughout the week.
  • Be responsible for leading weekly field trips and serving as the primary point of contact for the Camp Director in the event of an emergency.
  • Support weekly themed events of 250 campers, guest performances, and camp-wide celebrations.
  • Adapt activities to suit different age groups and skill levels, fostering creativity and teamwork.
  • Reinforced swimming schedules and safety expectations with both staff and campers to ensure smooth operations and a safe aquatic environment.
  • Assist in the pool 3–4 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Model safe swimming practices and support younger campers with changing and pool routines.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and enthusiasm.
  • Support staff and campers’ personal, social, and emotional growth.
  • Model community values during meals and throughout the day.
  • Ensure group cohesiveness between 3–5 different divisions
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Camp Director to review, update, and coordinate day-to-day camp operations.
  • Lead weekly staff meetings, training sessions, and team discussions.
  • Work closely with approximately 60 staff members to ensure smooth operations.
  • Communicate professionally with campers, families, and staff.
  • Lead 10–15 staff members of varying ages and experience levels, providing mentorship and support to enhance their skills and professional growth since joining the team.
  • Guide Counselors-in-Training (ages 17–18) and supervise younger volunteers (ages 14–16).
  • Document and report medical needs or concerns to the Health Director promptly to ensure camper safety and proper care.
  • Enforce positive communication with parents and families, addressing questions and concerns to foster trust and engagement.
  • Ensure staff classrooms are kept to a high standard, updating displays and materials to reflect weekly themes and enhance the camp environment.
