About The Position

FLIPANY is a 501c (3) non-profit, community-based organization committed to empowering youth and adults through health, wellness and nutrition education while advancing policy healthier communities. An approved meal sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Afterschool Meal Program (AMP), FLIPANY provides nutritious meals and enrichment programming to thousands of youth throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. Position Overview: The Junior Camp Counselor reports directly to the Senior Camp Counselors and/or the Programs Coordinator(s) and is responsible for aiding in the supervision of all camp participants. Junior Camp Counselors will be responsible for assisting the senior counselors in daily administration of the Summer Camp Program, including: ensuring the well-being and safety of all participants, administering games and activities, providing daily feedback to the Programs Coordinator, filling out paperwork and maintaining daily logs, and maintaining a fun and safe environment for the participants. The Junior Counselor is also charged with supervising the Counselors-in –Training (older campers aspiring to learn valuable leadership skills), and volunteers. This position requires sound judgment and comfort enforcing program regulations to participants, under the supervision of the Senior Camp Counselors.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License and consistent, daily access to reliable transportation
  • Must be at a minimum a high school Senior or enrolled in a GED program
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organization, time management and administrative skills
  • A self-starter who can work independently and within a team environment
  • Commitment to serving others and making a positive impact on underserved communities
  • Eligible to work with children as verified by the Department of Children and Families after a Level II background check.

Responsibilities

  • Mentoring children in hands-on learning experiences rooted in socioemotional learning and guiding them toward healthy, meaningful lives
  • Collaborating with Senior Counselors to offer education experiences during Summer Camp for local youth
  • Act as a resource for all Counselors-in-Training and volunteers by ensuring they are familiar with the schedule, the supervisor on duty, and the appropriate places to take their questions.
  • Aid senior counselors in tracking each camper’s attendance, medical conditions as well as photo release restrictions.
  • Ensure that campers are supervised at all times and maintain a safe and enjoyable camp environment.
  • Keep track of supplies for camp and notify the Programs Coordinator of any camp needs.
  • Ensure participants are safe (properly hydrated, playing areas are free of hazards, enforcing the buddy system, and maintaining set geographic boundaries).
  • Follow all protocol found in the camp standard operating procedure.
  • Interact with parents/guardians during drop-off and pick-up times.
  • Participate in daily set-up and clean-up of camp area while collaborating with counselors to assign set up and pick up duties to campers; fostering ownership of their shared space.
